As many know, I'm already a pretty ethical eater, but this book taught me so much and really shifted my view on our food industry and the food i eat. Unlike other books I've read on the subject, I didn't feel like I knew most of it already, or that so much of it was there for shock value (even though the shocking stuff is true as well). I also didn't feel like the author had his own agenda to promote -- it felt true and balanced and pragmatic. He's not vegan, not even vegetarian, not anything but a guy with a question -- where does our food come from and what's the ecological implication of each food/meal?

I can't recommend this book highly enough, all I can say is please read it. I want to start reading it again immediately, but it's already due back at the library.</user_review>

<user_review>Man, I really wanted to like this book, it came highly recommended. However, the more I tried, the more I failed. Or maybe the author (sorry MrTX) failed. It strikes me that he had these really(?) great ideas but when it came to actually working them out on paper, they just didn't work. Or perhaps it's that his really great ideas didn't actually poke above the grass of teenage tedium until the final chapter or two, when you finally get the a-ha moment. It was abrupt and startling and I felt a little assaulted with so much plot so late in a book that had been lacking it up until then. You did get a pay-off (kind of) if you stuck it out, but sticking it out was hard for me. His portrayal of the highschool mentality was right-on, which may have been a problem, unfortunately -- having lived through it once (minus the constant blowjobs), I'd rather it be within a more sophisticated framework (plot, character, tone) when i read about it (and remember, I'm all about reading YA books).</user_review>

<user_review>The story of the mad woman in the attic from jane eyre. A lovely story with gorgeous settings and lyrical language. however, being a lover of jane eyre, it was a little hard to wrap my head around, another side of the same story but not in the same way wicked is. It was also a bit hard for me to get into it because I knew the ending already (having read Jane eyre) and her ending is not pretty. Sometimes this works for stories -- like star wars, right? knowing the ending made the first ones better than they were, imo, like you were in on it somehow -- but in this story it seemed to preempt fully enjoying the story and characters. I think i would have enjoyed the book better if I didn't know until the end that she was Rochester's mad woman in the attic. yes, to get to the end and figure it out would have made this book more of a success for me.</user_review>

Lot of the bit and pieces are truly intriguing, illuminating, shocking even. However, overall it's a bit surface-y, I mean, I (a mother of a 5 year old and a 6 month old) shouldn't be able to read a 200 page book on economics in 2 days and not have any questions. Perhaps that's the point though, it's a jumping off point, a call for people to examine things differently, to look beyond the obvious connections. Plus, what other economics book is owned by 7500 non-economic majors? I should give it an extra star just for accomplishing that!</user_review>
