Interesting- a quick read. Fairly factual portrayal of the squalid world of tweekers and those who supply them. The writer clearly loves his home city, which is always nice. I enjoyed all of the inside Tacoma references. The characters were more well developed than they tend to be in this type of suspense/thriller/crime novel. I read this sucker in two days. Oh yeah, and the ending? Phhhthththth.

Oh my heartbreak. Reading this made me want to wrap Augusten Burroughs in a soft, warm blanket and sing lullabies to him. I found the scenes involving animals to be the most disturbing of all.

Hilarious. Insightful. Rambling. Full of shit. Chuck Klosterman is all of these things and more. I particularly liked his meta-story of trying to create a perfect world for himself via "the Sims."

I would give this 3.5 stars if that was an option. Kellerman books are generally not high quality literary gems, but if you want an entertaining book that you can finish in two days, he's your guy. This one had an interesting transvestite character thing going on, and another random plotline that seemed to be thrown in there as filler. The ending was mega-cheezy.

The best thing about this book was all of the Scottish slang. The surprise ending of this thriller/mystery was also pretty righteous, I must say, but I wouldn't exactly call this one a "must read." If you're looking for a slightly-more-interesting-than-usual pageturner of a book in the vein of John Sanford or Kellerman, you've got it here.

What a fun book! I can imagine really loving this book when I was nine or ten, and I still like it quite a bit at forty. I like all of the plot twists and the evershifting whodunnut targets. The author seemed to take pleasure in making characters that were well drawn and atypical. I particularly liked Turtle and Chris, two smart kids, each with issues that set them outside of the socially accepted circle. A rollicking read... I am looking forward to reading more of Raskin's work.

I have traditionally liked Ms. King's Kate Martinelli character, and this one was interesting because of the whole Sherlock Holmes subplot going on. It didn't end in a hugely satisfying way for me, which is why I didn't give it more stars, but I appreciate the amount of research on collectors and the Marin Headlands that was done to give this book an authentic feel.

Wow. Ron Rash. I think I've found a new writer crush. Mr. Rash doesn't seem to care all that much about plotlines. Rather, he focuses on character development and language. Oh, the language. So flawless. I guess some people have described this as historical fiction, but I don't know about that. It has a large component of history, but again that doesn't seem to be Mr. Rash's main motivation. The characters in this book are my favorite kind: sad, hopeful, flawed, proud, searching, multifaceted. This book reminded me a little of "Bastard out of Carolina," but not as sad. You should read it, yes?

OH MY GOD, THIS COOKBOOK RULES. I have a crush on Mark Bittman, and this book just affirms my rockstar feelings for him. He talks about everything from what you should have in a well stocked kitchen, what ingredients you should always have on hand, how to use a knife and other kitchen equipment, etc. etc. And, of course, the recipes. I just bought this today, and I can already tell that it's going to be my most used cookbook.

Spook Country had moments, but like an intelligent lazy teen it never reached its full potential. I liked some of the characters, particularly Hollis and the strange Chinese-Latino hybrid crime family members, but the general sense of alienation was so overwhelming that it made me sad. I've also started to notice and be irritated by Gibson's overt brand-name-dropping in his last couple of books. Maybe I should have read this one in the spring when my general outlook on life was less filled with rage.

With all this Gibson-bashing, I feel compelled to add that Neuromancer rulz 4 evah.

It's Snoop! From The Wire! This is the interesting story of Felicia Snoop Pearson's life growing up as a lesbian gang-banger on the streets (and in the prisons) of Baltimore. It's not the most eloquently written book, but there were some really great gems dropped casually throughout the book that made it very worthwhile.
