<user_review>One of my all-time favorite books. I just love the feel and tone of this novel. I can taste the booze, I can smell the cigarettes...it always makes me want to drink, smoke and dress in good clothing. This is about my 4th reading of The Secret History. It gets better each time. The narrator is so great and I secretly love him. What is it about? It's about Greek tragedy, groups of friends that know better, very smart people who know better, autumn, winter, spring thaw, love, hate, booze, cigarettes and murder. My favorite part is the narrator staying behind during winter break and almost freezing to death in his "rental" Goddamn I love that...the act of trying to find someplace warm to stay, right up until the last minute...and shaking so hard with cold that you just fall asleep, exhausted. LOVE it. I bought it when it first came out, and it had that lovely clear plastic cover. I lent it out...never got it back. I finally found a first edition at my used book store, however, it does not have the plastic covering:::snif::::I'd be willing to buy another first edition..WITH the plastic covering. I think I re-read this book every year and every year I find more things to love about it. </user_review>

<user_review>What? Huh??? I'm just stunned...what was Stephanie Meyer thinking? The Twilight series is a series about young love that is not meant to be...when did it turn into a straight out horror/gore novel? Don't get me wrong, I love horror stories...but not when it's placed in a young adult love story. I know the average reader of Twilight is not a horror/fantasy genre lover. That is not what is expected from Twilight. What IS expected is love, handsome vampires and angst. Not strange alien birth and gross out moments of distended bellies. Sitcoms "Jump the Shark" when they "bring in a kid". Brady Bunch, Growing Pains, on and on. Gross. Well...Twilight has "jumped the shark".

The Jacob story line of leaving Sam's pack and becoming an alpha...very cool...Seth and Leah, very cool. Imprinting on the abomination? Not so cool. WRONG. Disgusting and wrong. On many levels.

Meeting and learning about the other vampires was very interesting...and let's face it, it would have been more interesting if they played more of a roll in the story...(like I thought it was going to be...I thought Tanya was going to have some sort of hold upon Edward) Oh well.

Other things I hated:

Renesme - WTF?! review:
What?

That right there is what we call in fanfiction world as BAD and just plain BAD.
The cottage (barf)
The whole honeymoon..awful.
Edward gnawing away to get the abomination out of Bella :gah: I think I threw up in my mouth a little.
Not delving into how Rosalie feels about the whole baby thing
The birth itself...horrendous. (Don't write about the actual sex act but have a detailed graphic birthing scene...yeah,that makes sense. This may be a good thing for teens, however...I'd NEVER want to give birth after reading BD.

I'll probably think of more in the days to come.

Do yourself a favor...like other people have advised...stop at Book 3.
Jane Charlotte is a woman apprehended for murder and is held for psychiatric review...she says she is a member of a secret organization, The Department for the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons, whose sole purpose is to kill "Bad Monkey's"...people who are evil, mainly pedophiles. As the doctor reviews her case file, "Jane" takes us back through her indocturnation as an agent and tells of her relationship with her brother Phil, who may or may not have been abducted as a child. The twists and turns are fun and what I wouldn't give for a gun that fires coronary infarctions. </user_review>

<user_review>Another book in Koontz "Golden Angels" series (my take, not official!) These books touch my heart and at times make me bawl like a baby...not so much from the writing (but that does play a part) but because I am a rescuer of animals and I saw a lot of myself in the character of Amy. Great story of intrigue but so much like "One Door Away from Heaven" I think Koontz should sue himself for plagiarism Sometimes this took me out of the story. Another criticism is that the villian "Billy Pilgrim" (yeah, I know) belongs in another book. This was clearly a tribute to Kurt Vonnegut and all the HiHo and "So it goes" kinda took me out of the moment. I am a huge Vonnegut fan and I didn't really think this tribute to him went with the flow of this particular narrative. THAT SAID, my take on it is that Vonnegut was a Humanist and this book is all about man being kind (or cruel) to man and all creatures and how we have choices to make(again, my take) and I can easily see how Vonnegut's view of things influence Koontz. All in all, a really solid read. Koontz is a beautiful writer who really doesn't get enough credit because of certain genres he is placed in. A very solid story with great characters. (spoiler ahead) I LOVE the nun phone call. Very nice touch. </user_review>

<user_review>There are books that always stay with me...."The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" has just joined that rank. How many different ways are there to write a book? You'd think by now, every way/option would have been covered. Well, Junot Diaz has had his way with the written word and it's original. A brilliant tale told through different view points, along with footnotes from the "author" (my favorite). These footnotes are morality tales, history lessons, comedy routines or just plain ol' asides which are, most of the time, hilarious. I want a whole book of footnotes.

Each "voice" tells the tale of Oscar, a Dominican nerd who lives in New Jersey. He is fat, ugly and a virgin....yet this doomed nerd loves woman, loves the concept of love and wants it sooo badly, it ends up being the death of him. When Oscar realizes that the fuku (curse) on his family could be VERY real, he utters the word phonetically...you just KNOW it is the end of the story for Oscar.

During the course of the book, you learn the history of Oscar's family and it is very entertaining. Filled with family, betrayal, revenge, dictatorships, violence, sex, love, brutal beatings...it's a tale as old as time. But with footnotes.

I'm telling you, read this book if only for the footnotes.

A great tale. </user_review>

<user_review>I love Michael Chabon and this was one book of his that I haven’t read. I picked up it at Gotham Books in Manhattan and couldn’t wait to read it…even though it was a book for *kids*. I was disappointed in a way. It was a fantastic tale of *other levels of existence* that just rang flat for me. Here is what Amazon says: The setting is Clam Island, Washington, specifically the area on the western tip of the island known as the Summerlands, which enjoys zero rainfall and yearlong fine weather. Ethan Feld, a self-described really bad ball player, is recruited by a 100-year-old scout called Mr. Chiron "Ringfinger" Brown. Ethan is needed to help the ferishers, essentially fairies, to save their world from eradication. On the great infinite tree of worlds, Summerland is on the boundary between two such worlds, and a particularly destructive fairy called Coyote and his band of warriors are nearby and threatening to destroy everything. Other people have called this an American version of Narnia. Um. No. Not even close…however, if you love baseball and tales of Bigfoot and fairies, this book is for you! Come on Mr. Chabon, dazzle me! Book #24 of my 2006 Book List, finished reading it on 5-23-06.</user_review>

I enjoyed the back and forth between the past and the present. It was fun because I live in the Central PA area where this book takes place. If fact, I just had lunch at the Spring House Tavern in Gettysburg, the scene of a showdown near the end of 99 Coffins. Very cool. What a great use of history and legend. Horrible things happens in war. Horrible things happened in Gettysburg. Vampires just seem like a logical by-product. </user_review>

I'm kinda sick of it...and I count a few of my favorite writers in with this group. It's annoying and it's a waste of my time. What happened to Harry as far as his career, life, etc. I know that Rowling stated this information in interviews...but that doesn't work for me. It's got to be written down. Dobby's death was so sad and much was written about it...yet Fred's death was just glossed over. I don't get those choices.

Anyway, all in all, this was my least favorite. <user_review>What a great memoir of a girl growing up in 1953. It's not your typical 50's picture perfect family. Distance, illness and murder keep things interesting. Her autistic brother, Tyler, chews at his arm if he hears loud noises such as crying, loud talking, or laughing. If you had emotions, you had to stifle the sound...or risk Tyler going beserk. This means, the author, Mary-Ann Tirone Smith, never really gets to show her true emotions. Crying? What is that? She is also expected to take care of herself as her loving father has his hands tied with Tyler and her mother is too busy working and becoming an ace golfer. That isn't even the whole story. The book also tells the story of a murderer who kills a school mate of the author. Right in the neighborhood. The book, in odd chapters, follows the path of the murderer...basically from birth to his execution. It's fascinating and an amazing view of our judicial system.

The book is also a great portrait of America in the 1950's. It reveals that families can love one another...no matter how imperfect. LOVED it. I will read more of Smith's work. </user_review>

I tell everyone I know that they should read this great tale of adventure, love, friendship, loyalty, business and magic. The magic is the best part. The many stories being told in this book never get convoluted or lost. I never for one instance thought this book needed editing (which is what I think of most books). <user_review>Pow! Whap! BAM! FUN! This book was so much fun to read. It's about a world where superheroes and villians co-exist in every day life. It's basically the dumb jocks (see heroes) against the geeky smart people (see villians). They have problems with their parents...they have problems with romance, they have problems with their bionic parts. Get behind the scenes of what really goes on in the halls of superheroes and the jungle island liars of villians. (it's cheaper to have a jungle island liar as opposed to city dwelling.) heehee.
I love when Doctor Impossible, the villian, but the hero and narrative (one of them) of the book can't understand why he gives away too much of his evil plan when talking with people. Such a fun, witty book. </user_review>

Sookie thinks there is something fishy going on and discovers that Bill may have been kidnapped. While trying to track Bill down she ends up at a vamp nightclub called Club Dead. There, Sookie uncovers a stunning betrayal by Bill and has to decide if she’s going to help him or stake him. You will love some of the new characters in this book including Bubba, a VERY strange, vampire who just might explain all those Elvis sightings. Not the strongest in the series.
