I borrowed this book from the library. It's light on actual content, but the portion about the 5-minute daily makeup regimen is clear. The appendix even lists recommended brands and colors, and includes an expensive and cheap product for each item.

So, don't buy this book unless you really love fluffy beauty books, but if you're a late bloomer as far as cosmetics it's a good crash course for people who don't have much time in the morning.]]>

OK, so I've never been much of a makeup person, but now that I live in the slightly more formal South it seems that no one goes out without makeup on. Since one of the requirements of my dress code is that I not get mistaken for a student, I needed help looking a bit more professional.

While everyone else was absorbed in Harry Potter, I was sucked into this story that can be glibly described as a post-apocalyptic Grey's Anatomy. The last book that sucked me so far into another world was Alasdair Gray's Lanark.

I think this book would benefit from the first half being removed. I guess that's the section in which the author establishes his cred, but really he just seemed like a pompous ass to me. Once he stopped talking about himself and started actually talking about how to meet the Millennium Development Goals, the book got better.

Alas, Murakami's books can't all be masterpieces. If you haven't read any Murakami, start elsewhere, but if you've read a lot of Murakami this one is okay.

Men are pigs and war is hell. Swofford can write, but seems to have trouble with the idea of a narrative thread.
