This is a low-key, direct, powerful, friendly answer to the arguments of Ehrman and others questioning the reliability and consistency of New Testament manuscripts and their contents. The book is useful not only in the narrow context of these particular arguments, but also for general information on, say, first century attitudes and practices relating to oral versus written recording and transmittal of important information. The author's low-key approach is extremely important and effective.

I started to read this and abandoned it after fifty pages or so. It's written in a style that some people rave about and I actively dislike. It's an extremely spare style that one of the book review blurbs on the cover describes as a "punchy prose that connects like a right hook."

I know that others really like this style, and I can see why. I don't like it.

This was a pretty good entertainer. It had rather more technical detail than I wanted, but that's my problem not the book's -- technical detail is central to the concept. I've never seen the TV show so I can't comment whether the book matches the series well or not. I did read the book all the way through at a gallop, which is why I call it a pretty good entertainer.

It's a good, solid, restrained polemic. I'm not using "polemic" as a negative term. By "polemic" I mean a book that is part of a sustained public debate and it explicitly cites and answers opponents. A good, solid polemic is factual, fairly balanced, but does not attempt to be comprehensive. By "fairly balanced" I mean includes and addresses facts and statements that oppose its general thesis. Such a polemic would also avoid ad hominem sneers, calumny, and mockery. FWIW, I agree with the analysis and recommendations of the book.

This five stars is both for the translation and editing on the one hand, and the substantive works on the other. The long theoretical pieces by Bin Laden and Zawahiri were carefully done and show consistency and clarity in their thinking. The propaganda items I could discount and ignore. The theoretical pieces made me understand much more clearly the al-Qaeda mindset. For instance, al-Zawahiri stresses that any ruler who does not implement shari'a (Islamic theocratic government and laws) is an infidel and an apostate from Islam, no matter what faith convictions he might have or what prayers he might say or what pilgrimages he might make. That is, he argues quite consciously that what we would take to be the person's faith as believed and lived doesn't matter in the absence of what we would call political or legal actions -- the person is an apostate, an infidel nonetheless. More properly, al-Zawahiri would say that the political and legal things are an integral part of the faith life, so incorrect political and legal things are indeed simply and directly apostasy. This is one for-instance.
