Another success from Yannick Murphy. The difficult and simple emotions, especially those not fully understood by the characters experiencing them, are subtly and succinctly and fully rendered. Worth it for the means and the ends.

Eh. Ishiguro manages to confound and bewilder as gently as sleep in this weird weird book. His prose is so clean and his emotional control of the reader so subtle I admire the book without much liking it. Not his best but an internally successful, if questionably intended, attempt.

A wonderful follow up to his first book, the Benjamin Black series is, apparently, off and running. It has suspicious deaths, Dublin, and thoroughly hard-boiled dialogue. Totally worth it, but really ought to be read after Christine Falls.

Another success from Dara Horn in the early/mid-then-late-20th-century-european-then-american-jewish-multi-styled novel. The best of this book is a realistic, complex hope and pathos. Moderately imaginative and occasionally moving. Worth it, but no real rush.

Well-written, interesting subject. The only great lack is a definite conclusion but, as it is a survey of current research, I suppose that would be impossible. Another point for the writers in the epic writers-researching-science v. scientists-writing struggle.

A book about libraries and reading is a bit of an easy mark, but this one was done well. The prose is lucid and familiar, the subject is broad across time and place, and the curious facts and incidental stories are frequent. My kind of book.

Without doubt the greatest lexical achievement produced thus far and probably the best printed dictionary that will ever be (since it'll all be just internets from here on out). Beautifully made, cleanly written, and tremendously researched. Fun just to leaf through, definitive in settling disagreements this is a book more people should spend more time with, myself included.

An excellent, beautiful, thorough book. The only detriment is that the size of the pages, in order to accommodate the illustrative plates, makes the text lines unusually long. But what are you gonna do? This is the only and best history of punctuation.
