What made this "happily ever after" story stand out from others is the storyline itself. Much as "The Devil Wears Prada" and "The Nanny Diaries" provided an inside look into the worlds of magazine publishing and NYC nanny-ing, this offers a glimpse of the waiter-ing world to those of us who haven't ever done it...and though I'm sure there's a bit of stereotyping and dramatic license included, the restaurant world makes an interesting backdrop for the main character and her romantic exploits. Liked it.

I can't believe I've waited so long to read this wonderful book! I was a bit surprised at how...bawdy it was in parts, but even those are done well, contributing to an overall story that is extremely entertaining and intriguing. The only thing that disappointed was the quick, almost choppy end. Granted, we know how the Witch's story ends...but it would have been nice for the sequence of events - told from the Witch's perspective - to have felt as full and fleshed out as the rest of the novel.

This is similar to Dan Brown's novels (Angels & Demons, The DaVinci Code), but with just enough of a distinction (in writing style and in plot line) to make for an interesting read. The one disappointment was being able to figure out some of the twists and turns a little too easily as I was reading.

This was a story I couldn't put down...that I ended up spending an entire afternoon reading. It's similar in theme and presentation to Nicholas Sparks (a favorite of mine), but set in the wonderfully different east Texas. A love story through and through, the side themes of family, faith and atonement nicely complement that main purpose.

Okay, so the ending is totally predictable...as in, it's obvious within the first couple of chapters who the main character is going to fall in love with. But the story between the beginning and the end is entertaining and funny, and the dialogue has some wonderful banter. I found myself laughing quite often at the sarcasm and light wit.

I almost found this entertaining...but knowing that the exploits of the main character are simply thinly-veiled fictionalized accounts of the author's own experiences, I found the story a bit sad and a bit...disappointing. I mean, seriously?? I don't quite understand how any woman could receive money, jobs, drugs, gifts, etc. in exchange for (often extramarital) sex and not acknowledge that she just might be a prostitute - a well-compensated, high-living one, granted, but a prostitute nonetheless. By all means, if that's the lifestyle someone wants, fine...but call it what it is. In our modern society, don't try to convince the readers that it tooks months and months of living like that before the revelation of, "could I be a prostitute?" occurred.

This book is so well-done! There's enough detail that visualizing the scene is easy, but not so much that it becomes tedious; and the story unfolds in such a way that - up until the very end - you're never quite sure whether the house really is haunted or whether the many instances of eerie ghostly happenings are a result of Eleanor being there.

Also, the version I read had an introduction by Stephen King which I found interesting - helping me to understand how this book fit into the bigger scheme of horror/ghost stories.

Love the way this book is laid out...with snippets and brief paragraphs, instead of being dense with text to read through. Some of the points I already knew/use, but I particularly liked the chapter about time - the perspective on how we can organize our time more efficiently and effectively was very helpful.
