I thought this was very impressive, especially for a first novel. Haig does a great job with the characters and the plot. It was entertaining throughout. I've already picked up a copy of his second novel. Can't wait to read it.

This is one of the best books I've read in the last couple of years. The author drew me into the story completely before the first chapter ended. The characters were great, settings were great, prose was great. I loved the rich irony the author used throughout the novel. I look forward to reading his next one.

This was the first time I've read this author so I wasn't sure what to expect. I loved the movie version of Absolute Power so I figured this would be good. Overall, I was a little disappointed in the novel. It was way too long for such a weak plot. There were too many plot threads and many of them were not exciting enough to move the story. When things finally came together in the end, I had forgotten half of the events that helped the protagonists solve the mystery.

Wicked City is an eye-opening account of a corrupt and decadent small Southern town gone out of control. It is shocking that some of this stuff was going on in the 50s, much less here in Alabama ;)

Atkins, as usual, does a wonderful job of breathing life into his characters, some fictitious, others real. All-in-all a very good read.

Lehane proves he is a master of the short story as well as a novelist. Most interesting to me was the story 'Until Gwen' which was written in the rare 2nd person POV. I've never actually read a story written this way so it was fun to see it done and Lehane handled it well. Another high point was the play 'Coronado' which is a fuller version of 'Until Gwen.' I'm not one to read plays often as I'd much rather see them performed, but I have to say I enjoyed this one.

Wow. What an ending! This novel is such a departure from Lehane's others that if it had be written under a pen name, I wouldn't have guessed it was him. But, like his other work, he shows what a brilliant writer he is with this one. Great plot, interesting characters, the use of foreshadowing was just right. I was truly guessing right up until the end which way it would go.

This one didn't knock my socks off but it wasn't bad for a first novel. The author does have a cute and clever sense of humor which showed up in the form of the main character. But, the plot was a little shaky and most of the last 50 pages or so took place at sea in bad weather which made me feel like I was reading the Perfect Storm instead of a mystery. The dialog was scarce and not very convincing but then again I've never spent much time in Maine (maybe people really talk like that?).

Not sure I'll read the second one.

In my opinion, his brilliant use of humor to portray human nature is something that sets him apart. I laughed out loud throughout the book. He is even able to use humor in tragic situations (such as when Urbino falls off the ladder and dies in an attempt to catch the belligerent parrot) without coming across as morose.

The symbolic contrasts between love and Cholera were interesting and well done. I'm not sure I completely get what GGM was trying to say about love but I thought that it was interesting that Ariza seemed to spend his entire life in a series of sexual relationships which left him consistently empty and bitter. And, even the "love" he thought he had for Fermina wasn't what he always expected.

I had a hard time empathizing with Ariza. I couldn't get past him seducing the 14-year old girl and then destroying her the way he did. Even though he showed remorse and seemed to gain some understanding of selflessness with Fermina in the end, it wasn't enough to make me like the character. For that reason, I gave the book a four instead of a five.

My favorite character was Fermina. She was amazing. I hope the actress who plays her in the movie does her justice.]]>

The strength of this novel was the subject matter. What could make a plot more compelling than end-times prophecy? Although the author doesn't dip as deeply into the subject as Jenkins and LaHaye (Left Behind), the events of the story are inspired by his interpretation of possible scenarios from the Book of Ezekiel. So, the author started with a great premise and did a fair job of crafting a good plot.

I've been a big fan of the Kidd novels for years. I also read a few of the Prey novels which weren't bad but I didn't enjoy them as much as the Kidd novels. Finally, he's written something else I really loved. I'm hoping for more books with these characters.
