Worst of all? It ends on a dramatic, pointless cliffhanger! The ending goes something like: "then they journeyed to another distant realm, seeking another magical adventure. The End." I really wish he had opted for the "happy" ending of Merle and Junipa living with Lalapeya, but I suppose that would have been too straightforward.


When I read The Water Mirror about two years ago, I absolutely fell in love with Kai Meyer's writing. I found his combination of traditional YA fantasy with adult concepts (such as politics, history, and hell) absolutely intoxicating, and I quickly rushed to read more of this works. I just really liked how dark he was willing to get- even going so far as to bring real demons FROM HELL into the story.

But after reading his other series, The Wave Walkers, I've realized that, as great as Meyer is, he can't keep a story going. In both series Kai starts off very strong and draws you in, but by the second book you're simply bored to tears (or, at least, I WAS!). And the third is just flat-out anti-climactic.

I finished The Dark Reflections Trilogy, not because it was enthralling, or because it had non-stop action, but because I wanted to know how it ended. And that's no way to get through a series, believe me! ]]>

I've really liked this series. Although there are some weak/slow stories, I loved this story. It really got into the characters of the old ones, and helped show their relationship with Morpheus. Thus far, I had thought that the series was just so-so, but once it started to show us who Morpheus, Delerium and even Desire, really are. I was enthralled.

The relationship between Delirium and Dream is quite amusing and sweet, and that alone kept me turning pages.

Although it's not as good as the first, this book really brought closure to Crispin's story, and helped him grow out of his obsession with god. With the introduction of Troth, we see Crispin grow from an intelligent, naive boy, to a man with a future to protect.

I really liked it, but, of course, I don't think it can truly hold a candle to Crispin: Cross of Lead. It's missing a lot of the mystery, suspense and action that made the first so great. Still, it's a good read and I do recommend it.

I love the fact that Avi doesn't romanticize the midieval period but rather presents it as EXACTLY what it was: stinky, cold, and horribly unfair. Although I'm new to american comics, I've read my fair share of manga on many subjects, but I found Watchmen distracting. The plot, although interesting at first, quickly changed into something quite boring and ordinary, and the characters...well...they were interesting. Although the author based all of the characters off of real superheroes, while trying to make them real and flawed, I honestly felt that the comic portrayed neither reality or the typical hero. That, and I found every character annoying and unappealing. My two "favorite" characters (and even that's a stretch), Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan are both terribly incomplete people. Although Rorschach starts off as just an overzealous vigilante on the run, we quickly see that he is nothing more than a deranged and insane (more so than ANY villain, in my humble opinion) "man with a traumatic past".

I wanted to like Watchmen, I really, really did. But I couldn't get past the unlikeable, unattractive (both physically and emotionally) characters, the long drawn-out monologues, the tone, and the awful "golden age" style art.
I can see why people love Watchmen, but honestly, it's just not my cup of tea. ]]>

At my friend's urging, I finally decided to pick up Watchmen. The plot seemed intriguing, and from the very first page I was hooked. I only wish I could've stayed interested...

Sure, I've read the odd Witchblade comic here and there, and I've been a fan of manga since the 5th grade, but real, honest-to-goodness comics were out of my reach. At first I was absolutely repelled by the garrish colors, scratchy lines and overexaggerated facial features, and I was sure I'd get sick of the comic and be forced to put it down. I found the first story of Morpheus' imprisonment boring and slow, but once Morpheus actually came into the picture, the comic got a lot better. After I hit the halfway mark in this book, I just fell in love. As soon as the comic began to focus on the individuals, I found it a lot more enjoyable and was able to look beyond the ugly art. Sure, some stories are better than others, but I must say, after reading 3 volumes I look forward to reading the rest!]]>
