I had high hopes--this is about a farm boy in love with his cow. His brother may have gotten to the cow's "pink conch shell" first--a source of much tension and anxiety to the main character. The writing is very heavy-handed--poetic, dreamy. This really annoyed me at first, but now I'm thinking it works even if it is rather cloying. It's the thoughts of the main character that are written in this roundabout fashion. His brain is dull, but he has very strong sensual actions and reactions that are emphasized by the narration.

If I could give this book 1000 stars I would. Astounding, amazing, a masterpiece. Like all of VN's books, this is a tapestry of different plots and characters--infintely more than what appears on the surface. Nothing I can say would do this book justice. It needs to be read with a companion guide, at least if you're not a genius, as i am not. When I read this for the second time, side-by-side with Brian Boyd's companion book, I had to stop mid-way through. It was too mind-blowing. Absolutely ridiculous that someone could write like this.
