<user_review>2008 Pulitzer Prize Winner - Fiction

Oscar is an ominiously overweight science fiction obsessive who gets no love from the ladies. This might not be such a big deal if Oscar was not Dominican, and expected to have women hanging from his every extremity. He has no social skills whatsoever. At 23, he's never been kissed, let alone lost his virginity. He's constantly depressed and drowns his sorrows in J.R.R. Tolkien and food.

Although Oscar is our main character, this is also a story about his mother, Bela, his sister, Lola, his friend, Yunior (who is also our narrator), and the transformation (and stagnation) of the Dominican Republic from the 1950s to today.

This is an exquisitly crafted story that totally deserves it status as a Pulitzer Prize Winner. I'd expected something dry and intellectual, but instead found a heartwarming, engaging, smart story with sprinklings of Dominican Spanish and odes to classic science fiction and gaming. (Every time someone is physically hurt, he or she is down a certain amount of "hit points" to describe the severity of the injury.)

While I loved this book and would recommend it to everyone (especially in audio format), it was so dark that I had to take a break from audiobooks afterward.</user_review>

Her parents (both of whom Coraline loves, but annoy the dickens out of her) both work from home and have no time for her. She's an only child, and the only other people around are the other tenants of her building: two elderly ladies who are former actresses, and an strange gentleman who claims that he spends his days teaching mice to do circus tricks. They're not the best company (they can't even get her name right...they keep calling her Caroline!) The only thing even remotely interesting to do is explore outside, but when the days turn rainy and foggy, that's not a possibility.

When Coraline gets on her mother's last nerve, she's sent to explore the house. A locked door in the seldom-used living room catches her attention, and she learns that it was bricked up when the house was turned into flats, so the door leads nowhere. At least, it does until Coraline decides to go back to open it on her own. What's through that door starts as a fantasy, and slowly turns into a nightmare. Coraline has to be brave to reclaim everything she loves, and stop the horror from gaining control.

I tried. I really, really did. Everyone loves Neil Gaiman, but I just can't get into his stuff. I don't blame him. I blame myself. (The exception to this are the Sandman graphic novels. review:
A young zebra with no markings approaches his friends to see if he can borrow their beautiful colors and patterns, only to find that when he grows into his own, he's quite happy.

The pop-ups are bright and colorful. I love the book itself. However, much of the vocabulary is far too high-level for a pop-up book audience, and many of the rhymes are uneven. Some don't even make sense.

If you've got the book, use it, but make up your own text.
<user_review>Here's my haiku for this book:

Making friends is hard.
Spontanious combustion
is a bummer too.

SUCH a good book. I guess it's technically chick lit, but I hesitate to label bit because of the negative connotations that go along with that genre. It's not fluffy or trite. There's no romance, and no one has a terminal disease.

Maye and her husband (and their dog, Charlie) are moving to Spalding, Washington from Phoenix, Arizona for the husband to take a job as an English professor at Spalding University. Spalding is a quintessential college hippie town, laid-back and full of quirky characters. Maye, a pudgy woman in her mid-30's, is excited about the move, but not about leaving all of her friends behind. Ever the trooper, Maye puts her best foot forward and looks forward to meeting new people.

Unfortunately, making friends in Spaulding is more difficult than she ever imagined it would be. After narrow escapes from a coven of witches, a cult of vegetarians (Maye loves a good steak, but is willing to make sacrifices for friends), and an alcoholic who humiliates her on a friend-date, she decides to enter the town's Sewer Pipe Queen pageant, a long-standing tradition, sure this will help her attract friends.

Poor, poor Maye. She's got luck like mine. I found myself bellylaughing in the car, marvelling at how she can fall on her face repeatedly, but still get up and make the best of it. I empathized with her, and after the first disc, I wanted to call her up for the friend-date she so badly wanted.

I'm also reading one of her memoirs, which is equally hilarious. I can't wait for her new book to be released this summer.</user_review>

It's a good story not executed as well as it could have been. Great descriptions, though. The author certainly did her research. However, it really bothered me that the characters didn't take the whole "Back to the Future" space-time continuum thing very seriously. The kids, I understand, but a NASA scientist should be absolutely terrified at a change in the past changing the future.

I'm glad to see that the newer edition has been retitled The Time Travelers, because that's really the focus of the book. <user_review>Henry is sad because he has no tail, and all of his doggie friends make fun of him for it. With a little ingenuity, he gets some help, and finally has his own tail, but it won't wag, making him a laughingstock. During a walk through New York's Battery Park (which is illustrated as being covered in batteries), Henry gets the idea to attach a battery to his tail, which makes it wag like crazy. Too much of a good thing, however, makes Henry appreciate being tailless.

I'm not sure what it was, but I had a really hard time getting into this story. It was cute, but neither the text, nor the illustrations drew me in. School Library Journal reviewed it well, so maybe it's just not my cup of tea.</user_review>
