I have been enjoying this book, but something seems a little drabby about it. It's kind of a bildingsroman deal, with the woman gradually awakening and recovering herself from a childhood and early girlhood plagued by addiction, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. I know the combination of these three elements seem like they'd be really appealing to me, but the speaker feels a little juvenile. I did like the scene where she got her tattoo and was cured of all her life's problems...

This is one of the best books I've ever read. Really. It changed the way that I think about books and how they can be written. It affected the way I wrote my own manuscript when I was in graduate school. The structure of the book is amazing...there are so many layers and so much to consider in the way the book is put together...and then, there is some of Atwood's best writing about love. Some of the language is pure poetry...my favorite part includes the "falling out of an airplane by mistake" bit. Aaahhh!

This book inspired me to start my own karma journal. I have really been surprised by how influential it has been on my behavior and my life in general. Even if you aren't interested in yoga (like, in the sense that you don't go stand on one leg and pretend to be a tree), the book is worth reading. It's as much a spiritual explication of the Yoga Sutras as it is a cool novel. There's actually much less stuff about the postures than you might expect. Don't let the title mislead you...it's no step-by-step guide. It'll change the way you think about everything you do.
