Paolo Bacigalupi (who, despite his music-like sobriquet is actually an American from Paonia, Colorado, not a cafe dweller in Genoa, Italy) is one of the most important SF writers working today. He does not write space opera. Much of his work is focused on environmental degradation. He tries to imagine how life will look 50 - 100 years from now as we contend with global warming, peak oil, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, endocrine disruptors, etc. Paolo's work is largely dystopian, concerned with humanity's alienation from the natural world -- but in the tradition of SF as social critique, that comes with the territory.
