But Ethan knows nothing about any of it. Autumn applies to be a cowboy's wife in a desperate attempt to save her job. She is on the verge of losing her position at a magazine and figures that writing an expose about the desperate cowboy might be just the way to save it. What neither of them counts on when Autumn shows up at the ranch is their quick attraction for one another. Nikki realizes she never fell out of love, and Justin, opposed to love as he is, begins to realize he has feelings for Nikki that just won't quit. His friends have found love and he starts to realize that what he feels for Nikki is that same type of happily ever after kind of feeling. I really enjoyed that their reconnection was emotional as well as all the physical stuff. The true reconnection emotionally made the story much better than if it had simply been a physical connection. Setting this back in Marietta (where many romance novels have been set lately) makes it feel like a really easy place to fall into, so the setting and background is simple and warm, feeling like home, and you just can't help but fall in love with the town and the characters with every page. Kyle even writes a song for Val about his thoughts on her virginity and belief that she should save herself for marriage. Throughout the book, I appreciate Val's steadiness in her beliefs. I dislike how some of her friends treat her and her pledge to virginity, especially Cara who tosses the concept aside without really taking Val into consideration. I thought the characters developed well, even Kyle. She has an older boyfriend, Max, who is in a band, and who she decided she was in love with and they slept together. But when Lola finds out (far too far into the book) that Max probably doesn't feel the same way about their relationship, she decides it's time to step away...because at the same time, she's been re-falling in love with Cricket, the boy next door. Cricket is a little inventor. He tinkers with things and finds out new ways for them to work. He just sees things as a puzzle. Lola and Cricket are two pieces of a puzzle. They came together at one point, but due to their circumstances, fell apart, and thought they perhaps 'hated' the other. Life brought Lola and Cricket back together and they realize, they just fit together. Cricket admits he never stopped loving Lola, but because Lola is with Max, she doesn't want to do anything with this information. She struggles to figure out what to do and eventually, breaks up with Max and admits she is still in love with Cricket.
This book was so sweet, I could probably keep describing all the things I liked about it. There was one quote I just loved so much - I would have tabbed it in my copy, but I only have the book in e-book right now, so that's not going to happen. But it's here: Cricket: "...it took a long time before i found the courage to do the hard thing." Lola: "And what's the hard thing?" Cricket: "You have to be honest with yourself." I just love it!
I have to admit, I didn't connect with Lola right away because she was a bit odd. Definitely took me longer to connect with her than with Anna (who I think is me in another life...I just connected with her so fast!) But once I saw Lola as the girl she really is (nope, I never did the costumes) I realized she and I are very much alike. (hide spoiler)]...more
