Humanistic psychology was something we didn't cover too extensively in my psych classes but I'd always been intrigued by it, and this book certainly showed me more about it. I might be interested now in reading some of the actual books by the bigshots in the movement. It also taught me a lot about the culture of the '60's.(less)

I could not put it down and read the whole thing in two days. I definitely learned a lot from it and think a lot of people would be better off if they read it.(less)

My whole reason for wanting to read it was that it was billed as a "memoir" but I kept thinking it sure didn't read like non-fiction, and I come to find out it was PUBLISHED AS FICTION a year previously and apparently nobody cared about it and so they re-published it as non (how are they even allowed to do that??) I wanted to read psychological insight into kink stuff but it turned out to be a mixture of porn, stuff about her job, and relationship drama, and only the first of those was interesting. As porn goes some of it was pretty hot, but I can read plenty of hot porn online without having to wade through all the other dumb stuff. Not at all what I was expecting.(less)

But I turned out to really enjoy it. Parts of it were very exciting, the symbolism was intriguing, and even the "whaling manual" stretches I found interesting because I like it when books teach me about things I don't know anything about. The only times it lost me were when it went off on total tangents like "And now I'm gonna describe paintings people have made of whales!" Ishmael/Queequeg are my OTP, and I related just a bit too much to Ahab. A note on this edition: It had a lot of footnotes, which were helpful as far as sailing terms/allusions, but sometimes were a little bothersome when they were trying to explain to you what passages meant.(less)

I related very much to Francie--though I didn't grow up destitute, I was also a lonely girl who lived too much inside my own head. Brooklyn was very much on my mind when I read this book because I'd just finished a trip there and so I think that made the reading better. By the end of it, I felt as if the characters were old friends.(less)

It falls short of the jaw-droppingly good work she was to come up with at the end of her life, but you can definitely see her potential for that here. Several of the poems completely knock me out, particularly "The Stones" and "The Ghost's Leavetaking." Her skill is there, just not yet fully coming into its own.(less)
