Still a lovely book for children but with the introduction of Spiritino, the drinking of wine and amorous intentions, the appeal to adult lovers of cats definitely goes up a notch or two. (less)

I suppose because I was originally born in the Forest and the ages of the people in this book was similar to those of my parents and siblings that it was of particular interest. Many of the stories told brought memories from my own childhood and surroundings.(less)

Markham also has a habit of asking the philosophical questions of what good does military intervention and conflict do for world peace. You often find yourself musing over whether we have actually learned any lessons over the years. Especially when you look at the situations in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East in comparison to the late 60's and early 70's

It was a bit weird in a good way, I found myself wanting to know what happened next; which is always a sign of a good read. Not too sure about the orgy or whether it was necessary to include it, but I guess that if you are looking for bad behaviour in humans then that does get near the top of the list. I really enjoyed it overall and would recommend it both for a few hours entertainment and for provoking a few thoughts about human behaviour.(less)

There are some sexually explicit parts but given the period it is discussing and the fact that it is about female relationships and their life's experiences from wartime to modern days, they cannot be considered inappropriate. Or in fact any different to what you often find discussed on TV these days.
This book was an excellent dissection of women's relationships and not always in a favourable light. The author clearly understands women and what makes them tick, many people will find themselves emphasising with the characters and understand the hormone driven teenage periods and why some women are attracted by the charisma of powerful men. Highly recommended. (less)

The techniques used for training a dog are completely without physical punishment and concentrate on rewarding or not rewarding different behaviours to train your dog. The result, a happy contented dog with a matching owner that have a mutual respect for each other. Lovely way to live with a dog and worth reading about some of the myth busting techniques that the author describes.(less)

Clearly you hear what has gone on and you pick up snippets of past history, but to read a well researched book written about the region, which is my doorstep, is a journey of discovery. Where France sits in the world today to an extent is as a result of the events that took place in this region around the thirteenth century.(less)
