What a beautiful work of art this book is. On its own, the story is good but not spectacular, and perhaps not very original: the titular character is an orphan who takes care of the clocks in the Paris railway station. He's also a thief and an aspiring magician. He's obsessed with repairing the mechanical man his father had found in a museum before his death. Hugo also has to stay hidden, to avoid going to orphanage or prison. There's a mystery involving the mechanical man, but it's no overly complicated. The main characters, Hugo and Isabella, are likable and nicely realized, flawed, not angels in children's bodies. The Invention of Hugo Cabret apart, and make it one of the most memorable children's books I've read in a while. First, it's really a love letter to early cinema, and the people who first realized the fantastic, almost limitless possibilities of "moving pictures" as a storytelling medium. Second, the way in which Selznick uses his (deceptively simple) drawings to tell the story, to move the plot forward, it quite unique. The drawings are not just illustrations, so this is not your typical picture book, nor is it a graphic novel, nor yet a traditional novel. Maybe it's something completely new. I've certainly never seen anything like this before. Selznick's art is cinematic, and he makes full use of close-ups, medium and long shots, different angles, cuts and so on. He's also very good at depicting movement and emotions. And the art is beautiful, just stunning, in softly drawn shades of gray.(less)
