The way the Capitol covers the competition between districts for survival is hauntingly like the way US media covers world disasters- for ratings. It becomes even more disturbing to think the events are orchestrated by the Capitol such that the impoverished districts are forced to play along as coached. While the book maintains a you g adult lit status, it is clearly dealing with bigger, horrific, issues. (less)

Given the competition for this book in my life, this book was not my favorite. While I think the concepts are sound, the delivery really has to be out of the park, in this category.
Nevertheless, it is a great tool, and probably most effective in the workplace, not the bedside table.(less)

I am sure this book does not sing the same to folks who do not find their identity in their work, and whose industry is not fiercely competitive. Hayhurst describes his days and struggles with loving his work, regardless of it loving him back, and figuring out how to use that work and love for something meaningful.
The storytelling definitely has a Bull Durham flavor to it. Mostly this is super enjoyable, light, nostalgic and funny. Sometimes the descriptions come off a little annoying. Like the girl in college who wears too many accessories to make a point about her personality. (This last sentence is an example of the type of comments which fall at least once per paragraph- usually well-timed and placed, sometimes verbose and immature...)
It's a fast read, has some real nice life lessons learned, and will crack a few smiles. (less)

It is much like the movie-verse, in which his Earth interactions are a little tongue in cheek. This keeps the tone fresh and light while the subtext is very serious and faith-based.
The narrative was non-linear, which was a little disorienting at times, until I caught on to the pace. The pencils were mostly gorgeous, as were the layouts.

I read it with the Amazing Spider-Man tie-in, and would love to go back and read all the other tie-ins :-) Great great great stuff- I'll post no spoilers in this review.
I really enjoyed getting to know Carol Danvers a bit more, and some of the other Avengers who have not been in the spotlight as much recently. Also, prior to this, I never gave a hoot about Bucky Barnes, and now I would like to read the Winter Soldier stuff and see how it all goes down...!(less)

By far the most compelling Marvel event I have read. Really enjoyed Pete's struggle with choosing a side, and how his character bumps up against Tony and the other Avengers in those decisions. Awesome.(less)

The art direction seemed inconsistent, the writing was flat, and the characters were intangible.

Santiago, a shepard boy, gives up everything he knows to follow his Personal Legend. It's a really beautiful story filled with nuggets of wisdom. It offers a lot of comfort and trust in the process for taking chances, being fearless enough to risk everything, and believing in your power to experience miracles. (less)

This book is quick and easy to swallow, well-explained, super relate-able, and most importantly sincere. It was a really nice conversation to have running in the back of my mind over the last few months- helping me frame life issues in a new way and grow as a person. There is a lot to be explored in these ideas and I would love to read this book again. (less)
