Babe Ruth was probably the greatest legend of the National Pastime ever, his shadow and spirit living on in every field and bat today. This book takes into account one of the biggest legends associated with the baseball great and presents it in an easygoing writing as well as giving a humanistic voice to the man who made baseball the national pastime.

Even now, at 15, this book awakens in me such an amazing feeling in ways not many other books have or, maybe, ever will.
Big Kid Reaction: These are fascinating stories, and I can second what our teen reader says: they are enjoyable as an adult, too ... even as a Mom! The action is well paced, but slow enough for you to consider what is happening and start drawing out the lessons.

A missing mitt and baseball are at the center of the story, but there is a lot more to it. Short chapters, wide-set type with lots of white space, and some larger illustrations will make this appealing to kids just moving to chapter books.

We also read the book and found it filled with fun, information. The combo text/graphic novel style will appeal to readers of all skill levels. Young readers probably won't even notice that there is more text in the boxes than on the other pages.

[I think she just liked saying the word.] The illustrations gave her lots to look at while I read.
Big Kid Reaction: This is a fun, clever way to teach kids about teamwork. I would have loved to share this with her when she was a preschooler, as she would have been beside herself. There are a couple of spots where the rhyme seems to get stuck, but all in all it is easy to read.

She was very impressed by Bethany's story but found some of the images disturbing.
Big Kid Reaction: This is a book to read with your kids at least the first time through. It might not bother a fifth grader, but third graders probably need that shoulder nearby. That said, this is an incredibly well written, well presented story. The photography is incredible. The glossary is filled with words that are probably familiar to kids who play sports but they offer tried-and-true definitions that will help them.

It has a lot of action, as well as lots of twists and unexpected turns. Boys and girls ages 10 to 14 who are interested in sports and or mysteries will enjoy this book. It would be a wonderful birthday gift, as I could see that it could become a favorite book to read.

There is plenty of baseball history and tradition for the fan, too. It is an enjoyable read and offers students, teachers, counselors, and parents a chance to discuss topics, such as, orphans, mixed racial marriage, single parenting etc.

Peter, whom she introduced in the last book, now takes center stage. He is a compelling character.
