Caden Bosch is on a ship headed for Challenger Deep, the deepest point on earth at the southern tip of the Marianas Trench. Caden Bosch is also a high school student quietly suffering from schizophrenia. On board the ship, Caden is selected by the Captain to be the ship’s artist in residence, assigned to capture their adventure. In real life, Caden is the art director for a video game he is creating with his two best friends. They are worried as they see his style becoming more and more abstract. On the open ocean, Caden visits the crow’s next to think and get perspective on their journey. In real life, Caden pretends to join the track team to convince his parents everything is fine, but really he spends hours walking around town lost in his own thoughts. Slowly, Caden’s worlds begin to blend together and his friends and family can’t ignore that Caden needs more help than they know how to give. This book is intentionally confusing. Neal Shusterman, one of my all-time favorite authors, masterfully invites the reader into Caden’s head. Just beware of getting too lost that you can’t find your way out. ...more

If you have seen 19 Kids and Counting, you might have a good idea what Rachel’s life is like. With her older sister recently married, Rachel is the oldest girl at home and is expected to help take care of her 5 younger siblings, while her older brothers go to work with their father.
Rachel has been brought up as a member of the Calvary Christian Church, a strict Christian sect that teaches women to be caretakers and protectors of the family. Women are expected to be subservient to the men in their family and dress modestly, which Rachel’s older sister seems to be so naturally good at.
But Rachel’s curious nature continues to get her into trouble. Unlike the other girls in her church, it doesn’t come to her naturally to put others before herself. She is constantly questioning the church’s teachings and reading A Wrinkle in Time under the covers a night.
After a harsh scolding from her father, Rachel sneaks downstairs in the dark of night to log onto the computer and read the blog of a girl who used to belong to Calvary Christian, but ran away to make a life of her own. Rachel dreams of going to school, of a job, of a life outside the church…but can she leave her family and siblings behind because she will certainly be cut off from everyone she loves. ...more
