The universe created here is deep and terms are often introduced well before their definition is presented by enough context. The book also jumps around a lot, both through time and between characters. It could just be my own simple-mindedness but it did take me a good while before I was able to keep track of who was who, the makeup of the social structure, and just figure out the general setting of the book.
I liked the complexity and though it took me a while to get through the book, I ate it up every time I picked it up. I liked that the writer trusted me to figure things out as I went and that he didn't waste to much time trying to drive a point home. He wasn't overly repetitive and the story flowed better because of it. You learn about the rules of the magic as you see people use magic. You learn about the social structure as you see light eyes scheming or dark eyes talking as they toil. Sanderson does a good job of telling me the story while also creating a huge universe with complex rules.
I found the protagonists likable and relatable. I liked the more uniqueness of the magic and its rules, not just the typical telekinesis or the throwing around of lightning or fire. The plot is well paced and things actually happen during the course of the book. The characters develop and are introspective about themselves and their place in the world. Their motivations are clear and the actions they take make sense based on there motivations, social status, and knowledge. Also, questions raised in my mind about the plot or characters are answered and lead to more mysteries as opposed to just overly dragging out minor plot points or character traits.
I found it to be a fun and entertaining start to what I suspect will be a great fantasy epic. I would recommend it to any fantasy genre lover with the advice to hang with it until all the names, places and terms start to stick.

I found it to be funny and just generally fun. It is a classic scifi set up with the fun twist of a very entertaining and less serious voice. It actually had me laughing loudly a couple of times. It was a page turner for me and I plan to keep an eye out for this new writer's next book.
Update: I read this a couple months ago but liked it so much that I have come back to it already in audio form. I heard from the Adam Savage podcast that it is a well done audiobook, so I picked it up and am enjoying it all over again.

As per usual, The tv show is pretty good but the book is much better. The superstitious/religious/supernatural stuff threw me at first, as I am none of those things and that wasn't what I was expecting from the little western mystery book. I really liked the Walt Longmire character but it was harder to take him seriously after he started seeing things. That aspect mostly just surprised me as I was expecting a bit more of a hard mystery type book not odd hallucinations or ghosts. It didn't bother me as much once I altered my perception of the book in to a more fantasy like realm. All and all, I liked the book a lot. It was entertaining and kept my attention, a hard thing to do these days as I can be a bit a.d.d. when I am trying to get into new characters. The story was fun and not overly cliche and the main character had some depth to him. I'm definitely going to read the second one....more
