And again, just like True Grit, I come to the end of the story and find myself wondering why that story needed to be told. Perhaps I am just not sufficiently interested in the time periods that Portis chooses to write about. Nevertheless, his books are easy enough reads and while I may not feel like I've gained a great deal by reading his work, I've certainly not lost much by doing so either.(less)

The "agreements" themselves seem both practical and all-encompassing. The author seemed a little smug or self-congratulatory at times, and the writing was a bit repetitive and indirect for my taste. I suspect the piece could have been just as effective, or more even more effective, if cut in length by half.(less)

This book was a quick and very pleasant read, and offers a humorous look at the life of one Texas boy in early-60s Middle America. Charles Portis' characters ring true and elicit a sense of both kinship and compassion as the story progresses. This is a book in which not a whole lot really happens, and yet I am glad for having taken that short journey across the country with Norwood.(less)

It contains an astounding amount of facts and information about world history, all presented in such a way that it effectively undermines the typical western historical narrative familiar to so many of us. I recommend it to all.
