Thoroughly engaging with a finely constructed world and well drawn characters. I loved that I didn't always know what was going to happen next and that the author sort of seemed to take what we've come to expect as readers and move beyond to a new place. A very good read. The story didn't seem to really go anywhere. There were pieces but they didn't all come together. I was also disappointed because Islam seemed like an after-thought addition more than a well-woven in thread (as the summary suggested it would be). [Which I guess is more of a complaint for the jacket-writer :)] Also fair warning, there were some rather vulgar bits. The author did create atmosphere well, I'll say that. (less)

This book has great characters and an engaging story, lots of Victorian feel with a fashion-forward sprinkle here and there, laughter and tears -- all in all a great read (even if it did break my heart a little). Pullman is a wonderful storyteller.(less)

Rose is the narrator for this story and as always, she has her own, unique perspective on things. The story is great and the ending embodies the warm, comforting chaos you've come to know and love with this bunch. Now that I've read this newest one, I've put all five of them in my to-re-read stack. What fun it will be to immerse myself in 5 consecutive Casson stories ! (less)

And how sometimes you have to make a decision that is right for you and not for those around you or for tradition.(less)
