Leslie Marmon Silko's writing is how I've dreamed of writing ever since I decided I wanted to become a writer. I hope not to be disappointed by the second half of this novel, and I hope I continue to learn from her and her use of craft.
Although I don't think this novel is a perfect novel, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the ways in which Silko chose to tell the story of an individual and of a culture. Although I understand why others have found this novel to be frustrating and/or overly-acclaimed, I have a difficult time completely understanding why. Is it her writing style and overwhelming use of image, metaphor, and symbol? I admit that her language and use of recurring images can be a bit overbearing, but I felt that it all was in service to the novel and was not self-indulgent. I'm giving this novel 5 stars not because I think it's a perfect novel, but because I think it's a worthwhile read and a novel that I can continually learn from....more
