I shouldn't have been.
Marked tells the story of Zoey Redbird who, at 16 years old, is marked by a Tracker vampyre and is forced to move into the House of Night. The House of Night isn't as scary as it sounds, it's actually just a school for vampyres. Fledglings (those who are newly marked) come to the school to learn everything they need to know about being a vampyre. There is one problem, however... if they fail, and their body rejects the change, they die...
I enjoyed this book, a lot. It was a kind of Twilight meets Harry Potter, both of which I loved. I may have actually enjoyed this more than Twilight. There was definitely more of a plot to this than with the first Twilight book. There wasn't as much teen angst either, which can only be a good thing! The plot develops at a good pace and it made me want to keep reading.

It just didn't draw me in. As it's a novella there isn't really much room for character development and so it falls a little flat. The story just kind of meanders along and although it has a direction and an ultimate conclusion, it still feels like nothing much actually happens. It was an ok read, but after enjoying the first three Twilight books, I expected more.(less)

Generally, I liked it, but there were a couple of things wrong. Firstly, she could have cut at least 100 pages... this was a little slow in parts (although the last few chapters made up for that somewhat - they were real pageturners). Also, she repeated things A LOT... like how 'cold' Edward was... ok we get it, he's cold, you don't need to tell me 100 times!
Apart from that, this book was quite good. I liked the story and the character development was pretty good - I felt like I could connect with Bella, and I had a pretty good understanding of Edward. I liked the mix of action and romance, which wasn't too heavy. It's a light, fun read - which is surely what YA is meant to be?
I will probably be reading the others in the series, however this book didn't grab me enough that I will rush out to buy the other books.

Looking at the other reviews, I appear to be in the minority, but I felt that this book was much better written and had more purpose, an actual story, to it. It also didn't drag for me at all, which was Twilight's downfall for me. Maybe I didn't read Twilight in the right frame of mind? Who knows?!
Anyway, back to New Moon. Like I said, I felt that this book had more purpose. Meyer seemed to have really thought about what she was writing this time. It was constructed more solidly and the characterisation improved immensely. I think maybe this was in part to do with Edward's absence. I know a lot of people take issue with him leaving, but I think that it was necessary to flesh out the other characters that had been introduced in the first book. I liked Bella's relationship with Jacob and I really grew to like him. I did figure out his 'secret' before it was revealed in the book however I enjoyed the suspense leading up to the revelation. I really felt for Jacob throughout the book, he clearly loves Bella and all she could think about was Edward.
I think that Meyer did a great job of dealing with the teenage angst of an ended relationship. She effectively portrayed the feelings that Bella went through when Edward left - it completely devastated her and I could relate to a lot of the emotions she went through. I have to say there was a part of me that felt like slapping her around the head, but mostly I sympathised with her.
This book completely drew me in and I spent most of my spare time reading it as I just couldn't put it down. I loved how the ending sets up the next book (Eclipse), and I'm really looking forward to reading it.(less)

I'm not really sure why, but I know that I was definitely more engaged with the story and couldn't wait to read it. I liked the pace of this book and although it was longer than the other two, it really didn't seem it whilst I was reading it.
The book follows the continuing story of Bella and Edward. They are back from Italy and find themselves embroiled in the mystery of a spate of killings in Seattle. Bella is still struggling with the feelings she has towards both Edward and Jacob, and what this means for her future.
The story is paced well and kept me interested. I couldn't put the book down because I was eager to know what would happen with both the mysterious killings and the love triangle. Some things haven't changed - the teen angst is still there in all its glory and Bella still obsessively analyses every little detail of her relationship with Edward - however I don't think that this is a bad thing. Sometimes you just need a book that you don't have to think about and that you can escape with. This book is that perfect release. Looking forward to reading Breaking Dawn. (less)

I couldn't put it down and was really sad when it finished. Bella's character was really well developed throughout this book and I was definitely rooting for her throughout! Brilliant escapism!(less)
