The moon gets knocked out of its orbit and causes a dark and stormy apocalyptic weather changes that make life near impossible for living. This time the story is set in NYC and Alex has to look after his 2 sisters after his parents go missing. Everyone is so good and while there is a lot of Catholicism and god talk, it didn't feel preachy. Highly enjoyable, 4.5 stars. (less)

There is apparently a lot going on in the world outside of the island and we only get little peeps and glimmers which is pretty lame since the outside world does make a big impact on the island life. How could something that started off so promising be such a letdown? Bummer. 2.5 stars. (less)

The last two thirds contains recipes and diy planter info, which wasn't what I was expecting (but then again, the complete title is "plants, projects & recipes"). I guess I was just interested in the plants part.(less)

Interesting story and family and friend dynamics along with the pressures of performing and being a success, but I didn't feel connected to the characters, especially Lucy. But there is longing and crisis and relationships that are well-written and interesting. So I teeter and give this a 3.5 stars, while I wait for the next Sara Zarr novel. (less)

So much felt familiar after reading Wild and that's not a bad thing. 3.5 stars.(less)

As a sequel it was pretty gripping and I wanted to beat up the main character as he made a stupid move or two. I totally misread the cover though - to me it looked like a skinned human which is in keeping with the book. Also, get used to the word "flensing". (less)

It didn't help that I was totally clueless to what happened in book one, so starting this one so abruptly into the action left me severely disjointed. It's a nostalgic, of course, and I liked the stories and the feel of the book, reminding me of so many of the 'zine-y books that came out in the early 2000s. I love making mixed tapes and I've been on the receiving end of some pretty fantastic ones so I'm giving it a half star bump on nostalgia grounds. 3.5 stars. (less)

I can also confess to doing an inter-library loan (thanks Fort St. John!) just to read this book. I was intrigued in Rodney Mullen's life after watching the doc "Bones Brigade" (highly recommended if you like skate docs) and this book helps to fill in most of the gaps about his crazy family life (and though autism isn't mentioned, I think Rodney might suffer from a smidge of it). It's a speedy read & I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone other than fans. (less)

My MIL suffers from bi-polar disorder and so I could relate to much of what Forney wrote about. It also put into perspective just how different the US and Canadian medical system is. If Forney didn't have a doctor as a mother who could pay for her expensive prescriptions or expensive treatments & therapies, who knows where she'd be. Recommended. (less)

I've never seen the American Office so I have no idea if it's good (I've watched 5 minutes of several episodes and it never grabbed me), but I LOVE The Mindy Project. And because the show isn't on every single day (though I *may* have seen each episode more than once), it's nice to have this light read on-hand. It's fluffy, there's some skimmable material, but there's also some chuckle-worthy chapters. I had no idea that she got her start in tv by writing and acting in a Fringe play about Matt Damon & Ben Affleck - how awesome is that? It's probably only a 3-star read, but I'm bumping it up to 4 since it's such a likeable read (plus the cover is so cute & the back cover photo is hilarious). (less)
