Its refreshing to read about a hero who isnt a rake or rogue. There are way too few fops and dandies about. Who doesnt love a man who dresses fashionably and isnt afraid to flaunt it? ;)
I really liked the hero´s sense of humor and his observations of things around him (and the heroine of course) He wasnt just a dandy/fop because of some vague reasons. It was a kind of rebellion for him (against his all too proper parents) at first I think, but it had become part of his personality in time. He had embraced that part of his personality fully.
As for the heroine I cant say I liked her very much with her "oh my god im so plain and my sister is so beautiful" internal monologues and her treating the hero badly because he offends her just by being himself. I could have understand if he had treated her badly but the animosity was all on her part and for the silly reason of him making her feel shabby next to him. :/
I would have bought her resentment and bitterness if she had been a bit older but to me it come across more as teenage sulking.Wich is perfectly natural since she was teenager (18) But with all the reading and general bluestocking behavior she prided herself on having I would have expected her to be a little less smallminded.
In most romances the heroes doesnt deserve their heroines and has to work to win their love. However in this book it was the opposite.I wasnt so sure the heroine deserved the hero!
In the end if I have to think back about this book it felt like it was made up out of bits and pieces,it starts out as a compromised situation plot, then they marry and goes to London for a bit and you think "oh its going to be a making the marriage work plot"but no then they have to go to the hero's inherited house and it turns into a gothic story.
I guessed the cause for the spooky going ons at once, it was (view spoiler)[of course smugglers. Why is it mostly always smugglers really? Get creative authors, please. (hide spoiler)]
In conclusion I think this is a good book to pass a few hours with, but sadly not keeper.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>(less)

This was an odd book, there were things I liked but also some things I didnt like. But I can very well see myself reading the next book in the series though even if the middle part got a bit boring I ended up reading it all through wanting to know what happened.
I need to formulate my thoughts about this one in a better more comphrensive Review..to come(less)

The h kept on talking about a character thats heavily involved in the set-up of the plot, but shes never made out to be a real person or as the heroine claims one of her closest friend. And then theres the guy the heroine has a crush on...I couldnt quite figure out how she could have feelings(or how the reader could understand why) since from the beginning hes made out to be pretty bland and flat, with no character what so ever.
Then the book took a strange turn... I found the I love the May/December romances but things came awfully close to crossing over into icky, due to some conversation the H and h had after ..er...consumating their relationship.
So in all-an ok read, not good, not bad..it just is. Some books stay in your mind long after youve read a book, this is so generic Id mostly forgot it by the time I finished.(less)

"If I had realized that so many distinguished persons would take it seriously, I would have spent more time and pains on it."
Miss King-Hall's imaginary diarist, Cleone Knox, supposedly had traveled around 18th-century Europe, meeting and recording her impressions of Voltaire and King Louis XV of France, among others. Critics declared the diary authentic partly because it contained obsolete expressions and spelling and lots of capital letters.
"Her diary must take its place beside that of Mr. Pepys," one critic wrote. Another opined, "No modern girl will ever write a diary like this. Cleone Knox breathes the very spirit of the witty, robust, patriotic, wicked, hard-drinking, hard-swearing 18th century." The diary went through several printings on both sides of the Atlantic.
Six months after its publication, 19-year-old Miss King-Hall admitted that she had written the diary because she was bored. And she did have a lively imagination. About her visit with Voltaire, she wrote, "The great man received us in a chintz dressing gown. ... Sometimes affable, more often peevish. To tell the truth, he reminded me of nothing so much as a chattering old magpie. We listened, silent, with the Respect which is due to Genius, however Wearisome it may be."
I have to vent. I had expected a different take on this story.
It feels like the author is lecturing the reader for reading historical romances, wich seems a kind of paradox to me.Constant remarks about the heroine spending too much time writing her stories and immersing herself in her imagination.
I can agree that to become too involved in a fantasy world isnt healthy for you,but without imagination where would we be?
I dont think much of the heroine either she comes across as childish and contrary just for the sake of it(shes 26 years old) The things she looks for in a man is something a 14 year old girl might find fantasize about
The hero is somewhat better, more matu re but I have to feel connected to both sides of a couple to buy the romance. Its just stated that he is in love with the heroine in the few first pages.b
Probably will think twice before giving this author another try.(less)

Who knew that the story about a slave woman accusing her masters son (whose lover she is and who has given her 4 children) of breaking his word and not giving her freedom could be so dull.
((This is set in South Africa btw so as far as I can tell slaves could lodge complaints against their owners. Its all explained a bit badly in the book.
