In one of the most emotional stories in the series Gownley makes you think twice about military families and it is an emotional roller coaster.
However all is not emotional has Amelia's flirtation with bad boy Kyle continues as the two go on a "not a date". And Amelia gets schooled in her families rich history in the brilliant 4th volume of this amazing series. Plus Amelia's mom finally gets back into the dating scene and Aunt Tanner is having home ownership issues.
The series is an incredible exploration into reality, a reality that everyone at one time has probably experienced. Gownley's nuanced and clean art and wonderfully fun story can at any second hit you with an REM joke or nail you with the raw emotion of a 10 year old who may never see her father alive again. Filled with fully formed characters Amelia Rules continues to be one of the all time greatest comic stories of a generation. Uncomfortably close to real life we find bits of ourselves in all the characters, and we love and hate them as well, because they are a little to close for comfort. ...more

YOU ARE INSIGNIFICANT! Vol 3 made Amelia Rules jump from good to great. A realistic portrayal of life as an only child with divorced parents. Vol 3 kicks off with the beginning of summer vacation and maybe a brutal change for Amelia, but luckily her Aunt Tanner former pop star saves the day
We also get to know some minor characters from Book 2 as the members of GASP have to take on their arch enemies the Ninja's and a new group called the Legion of Steves. Along the way we also get to know the history between Reggie and Rhonda. And the heart breaking story of Trish one of Amelia's new friends.
The series as usual shows a brutally honest portrayal of life as a 4th grader. But the two key stories that sky rockets this volume is the backstory if Reggie, who in 1st grade was a quiet, shy, bullied, boy which reminded me of me and the words of wisdom his mother always told him. You are a brave boy and your home is near. With those words written on a piece of paper Reggie keeps on himself and pulls out whenever he needs it, it becomes his mantra and shows why Rhonda would fall for him.
Amelia co-opts it and makes it a mini mantra of her own as well. But the real emotional story is that of Trish, young girl who lives near Tanner's new residence. Writer on a tween magazine produced by a friend of hers. Trish writes a fantasy series about Trishara and her battles with the evil Shadowman. In reality it is playing out a situation that Trish is dealing with which is in itself tragic. It all wraps up in the final story of the collection that takes a peek into the future of Amelia and Rhonda that adds an emotional cap to the story of Trish and it is one of the best stories I have ever read.
A great series with fully formed characters, comedy, romance, drama and everything young kids go through. Brilliant series. ...more
Amelia Rules is a book I read a few years ago and I adored it. But with the arrival of children and more I did not continue. Now my daughter is 9 yearAmelia Rules is a book I read a few years ago and I adored it. But with the arrival of children and more I did not continue. Now my daughter is 9 years old the same age as Amelia and today she discovered Amelia at the library. She hasn't read it yet but I took the opportunity to read an Amelia story that I've never read. And it was brilliant. Amelia's parents are divorced her dad still lives in NYC, her mom moved herself and Amelia to Pennsylvania to live with her sister and Amelia's aunt Tanner, a former rock star.
It is Amelia's 1st Christmas as a child of divorced parent's and she uses the guilt they feel to maximize her present load, but then she learns her mom does not have as much as her dad and that Christmas presents may be light this year from Santa. So Amelia starts to freak, especially since one of her friends is planning to prove Santa is a fraud and gets Amelia and their friends Rhonda and Pajama Man to help. Later on Amelia discovers something out about Pajama Man which gets her to looking at Christmas from a different angle.
Filled with heart and humor this book nails the life of an overly smart girl trying to wrap her head around divorce and new beginnings. Also included in the book is a second story of how Amelia met her friends and some behind the scenes look at how creator Jimmy Gownley creates his story. Fun fast read, gorgeous art for all ages. ...more
