It is set in England during the Napoleonic wars and tells the story of a young witch who is sort of, trying to find her magic, her happiness and save England all at once. It sounds lame but really was pretty good. I've liked everything by Marissa Doyle so far. (less)

In this book she becomes a spy for British Intelligence, joins the Paris Ballet, then joins the French army, trains some new recruits, befriends Napoleon and saves the day. All in like, two months. I know it's not realistic for any human to do these things, but I don't care. These books make me happy and the audio is completely fantastic! (less)

First of all, I loved it. I loved that it started right into the story witout any boring preamble. I love the cahracters. The heroine was hilariously sarcastic throughout the entire book and the three brothers in the story are each individually charming as well. Especially the youngest one! I also loved the zany adventure of them all solving the mystery together. What did I not love? Well, I thought it was a romance so I was sort of expecting, I don't know, some romance.(less)

The beginning of this, like many books, is a little slow to get through. There are just so many characters and situations to be set up. About halfway through however, it gets so ridiculously funny that I think I was actually crying while laughing and reading. When I started reading I tried to mark each funny line with a post-it but after about a chapter I realized there are not enough post-its. You just have to read the whole thing! (less)

I really love both the hero and heroine of this book especially well. The hero is a cowboy oil driller who has a secret identity and the heroine is a bicycle riding, bloomer wearing feminist of her day. So fun! I found out after I read this that it is actually the second of two books but I'm sort of glad I missed the first because from what I can tell, it was kind of a downer. The only complaint I have is that this book gets a little preachy at times. All of Gist's books are in the "Inpirational Romance" category but none of her others actually have religion come into the storyline. I can see how it was important for the story but I did find myself rolling my eyes a few times. (less)

The reader does SUCH a great job on these that I can't even imagine reading them instead of listening to them. I think her American West accents are the funnniest yet and since this book is set on the Mississippi, everyone sounds hilarious. The stories are comepletely far fetched but if you can suspend your beleif in reality and just enjoy the characters and the story, they are well worth it. Jacky gets better and better she really feels like an old friend rather than a character from a book.(less)

This book was so much fun that I can't give it anything less than five stars. Seattle in the 1860's has a serious shortage of women so they decide to have bunch of Civil War widows and orphans sent out. What could possibly be wrong with that? The story has just the right amount of historical charm, a beautiful and spunky heroine, a ridiculously good-looking and perfect hero and enough kissing scenes to make it really feel like a romance without being at all dirty. Perfect book.
Sure, he's a little too perfect yet can't stop himself from cutting down ALL THE TREES but come on, it's finally beievable that the hero would actally have rippling muscles... he's a logger! Yay! (less)

Normally if you want a clean Regency you have to read Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer (who I love) but they always skimp on the heat, and it takes a lot more work to get through. This book managed to get it all together and it was quick, fun and very romantic. I don't recommend listening to the audio version of this. The reader has a fakey, over-the-top English accent that makes it really difficult to take the characters seriously when they all sound so ridiculous. I think I would have really loved this if I had read it on paper. (less)

Maybe for the last 2 years. This book has everything; History, humor, food, travel, inspiration, great writing and a fantastic love story. After reading this I feel like Julia Child is a long time friend and as each page turned I found myself admiring her more. I really can't say enough good things about her or this book. It made me want to be a better person... and REALLY want to go to France! (less)

While I sort of loved the movie of this, reading the book was even better. Which is saying a lot because there isn't even a hint of a love story and that usually earns a negative 3 stars from me. Great book. I would recommend it to anyone.(less)

She always does such a good job with her characters and crazy plot lines that I'm always amazed and surprised and this was no exception. The main character, the Duke of Sale, is the least likely romantic hero I've ever read and I loved him more than words can say! I had no idea who his love interest might be, or how they might get together but I think I fell in love with him myself pretty early on so it didn't matter too much. And did I mention it's hilariously funny too? No brooding tall-dark-handsomes here, just a funny, totally original, believable and sweet story.(less)

I try to read it every year before Christmas and each time I find new things to love in it. Even though I've seen every movie version ever made (and most of them are very acurate) its still not Christmas without sitting down with the real deal. It has all the charm and magic of a Dickens novel but with the added bonus of way fewer pages!
Just listened to this in audio form (12/12) and it was better than ever! Still the best Christmas story ever!(less)

I found it to be depressing, overly violent, lacking in any sort of character development and devoid of all feelings. And on top of it all we didn't even get all the cool science-y stuff. At the end of this bloody tale we learn that much of it was true. That Captain Charles Hunter really did lead the most daring raid ever attempted on the Spanish and that his crew were real...etc. But even with that, much of this was fictionalized so why not add some good into the mix of horrible and depressing? Why? I'm just going to assume that Michael Crichton would have improved upon this if he had been the one to turn in the manuscript. There was, perhaps, a reason he had never done so. (less)

Not only does it have a lot of pages, each sentence is a work of art. Each paragraph is a masterpeice. Dumas did a truly amazing job of capturing individual human experiences in each and every character of this novel. There are no half thoughts. No open ended questions. I know these characters and what makes them tick. The problem is, I sort of hate most of them and I hate how the story ended. I really feel like after going through so much I deserved a fantastic payoff at the end. Nope. Its just a really long and beautifully written book about grown men who act like toddlers and fight with swords a lot. And get drunk all the time. And gamble. And kill people. And seduce women...you get the picture. (less)

The audio recording of these books are so amazing it's hard not to love everything about them. Having said that, this wasn't my favorite of the series, but there were parts of this book that I really adored and I can't wait to listen to the next one. I hope Mr. Meyer gives us a better ending to the next book because the end of this one was terrible! (less)

The first book, Bloody Jack, is still my favorite of the series but I feel like she's part of my life now so I don't care if she never settles down, I'll keep reading (listening actually) to her for as many books as I can. Lucky for me each book is pretty long and stuffed full of history, humor, romance, adventure, pirates, Jacky dressing up like a boy...etc. It's just way too much fun. (less)

Secret marriage proposals, vindictive mistresses, dueling gentlemen, highwaymen (oooh!), kidnapping, gambling, kissing...etc. I could go on and on. I don't know where Georgette Heyer came up with plots like this but its easy to see how romance writers tody are still trying to do what she did with ease (and without all the cliche sex scenes). I listened to this as an audiobook read my Richard Armitage himself and trust me when I say he has the Sexiest. Voice. EVER!
I did have a thought towards the end that the hero seemed to have superhuman inteligence, but then maybe that's what you get when a 36 year old marries a teenager. I don't care. I still loved it. (less)

Victorian London, vampires, werewolves, steampunk, mystery, and a feisty heroine who loves to eat. It's awesome! I don't know how Gail Carriger was able to mash all the genres into one book, but it totally works, as long as you're in the mood for something totally and completely silly. (less)

What else could Jacky possibly get into? I knew that pretending to be a boy on a British Naval ship couldn't last forever but boarding school in Boston? Wow. Poor, poor Jacky. My only complaint is that while she totally screws everything up, she's also sort of turning into a Mary Sue. But this is not a big enough complaint to keep me from reading the next book to find out what sort of trouble she gets into! Love it!(less)

The characters, the discriptions and even the story line were all highly entertaining but the Author did that thing where she hinted that two of the characters were romantically interested in each other but never bothered to tell us what, if anyting, ever happened between them. Why? Why go to the trouble of hinting at it if you're not going to finish it? Now all I can think of is unrequited love instead of all the other good stuff that was actually included in the book. Grrr. (less)

I love Betsy, her family, her insecurities and everything about her life but mostly I love that she is exactly the same as any teenage girl today even though this book is set in 1906. As a Freshman starting high school Betsy is more concerned with friends and boys and how her hair looks than anything else (sound familiar?) but somehow manages to figure it all out just in time for her Sophomore year where she proceeds to date a boy she doesn't like just because he has a car. While this might sound like a waste of time, its not. The details included in the story and the way Maud Hart Lovelace makes the world 100 years ago come to life is truly not to be missed. I plan to read these books again and again! (less)

I love Shakespeare, time/dimension travel, new takes on old stories...all of it. Such a great idea! Sadly, I kept getting distracted from the story by the narrator who was constantly telling me what to think! NO!!! Why tell the reader what to think when you could just show them? Why why why??? I love reading YA books but this is my biggest complaint about the genre. Readers are smart, savvy and perceptive people no matter their age so lets let them gather their own conclusions and find their own lessons rather than jam them all down their throats. No one likes that. (less)
