"On Edge", one of the chapters in the book, is the best essay I have ever read. Ali Smith has a wonderful imagination. It is sad to finish this amazing book, so I will be coming back to it again and again.(less)

The sort of book you only put down when it gets too gross. Otherwise a compulsive read.(less)

At times, though, the beauty of her writing and the attention to some details might have been too much, and I wanted her to get on with it. Overall, though entertaining and well-written.(less)

I have to read paragraphs twice to even get a slight understanding. But I am very interested in what he has to say, so I will persevere. If anyone has any insights (perhaps the person who taught this to undergrads?), please share. (less)

For me, a middle-aged lesbian-artist, it is enlightening to read how the other half live-that is, young, straight women, who are also artists. Some of the thoughts she expresses, such as the narcissism of the artistic process, are important and honest. The whole book strikes me that way.(less)

I liked the normalcy of the wife, and the contrasting of her personality with that of Hemingway; thoughtful and complex.(less)

And I came away thinking that Rosenberg could have been anyone with low self-esteem and a tragic need for approval. Definitely a quick read, but, in the end, not sure the story actually amounts to much. The reading of it, perhaps like the process of creating, was the main thing.(less)

I also work some at the University in question, so that is another thing that I was interested in. Although for the last several years I have found Oates's writing hard to take-too gory and depressing-in this one, she has mellowed, and, save for two painfully graphic descriptions,it was easier to digest. I don't know if anyone will come away with a really favorable review who doesn't believe that the world is a dangerous place and we, (read: women) must be vigilant in protecting our interests. But I am ever distrustful, and therefore, vigilant, so this book and its subject appealed greatly.(less)
