First of all, this book is completely swoon-worthy. The romance is SO FREAKING ADORABLE. Absolutely loved it. Jay and Violet are just way, way too cute. Love them together. I really love that they have been best friends forever. I think that just adds so much depth and truth and realness to their relationship. They know each other deeply and really understand the other person. Plus, I LOVE that Jay knows Violet's secret. I was so happy to read a story where a girl has some sort of strange power and the people that she's close to actually know about it! Her best friend, her parents, her aunt and uncle (who just happens to be the chief of police). I'm so glad there wasn't that extra drama about a girl trying to hide her ability or figuring out how to tell people or dealing with people not believing her. It's a part of her so the people who are most important to her know about it. So refreshing. Also, not trying to make anyone jealous, but Jay reminds me so much of my husband, right down to the crooked smile. Plus, we were best friends first too (not nearly as long as Violet and Jay but still) :)
In addition to the super cute romance in this book, there's a serial killer terrorizing the region. Girls go missing only to show up dead and disposed of in a few days. And Violet decides she's the only one who can find the bad guy, so she's off to try and catch a killer. I was happy that at least she clued Jay in on her plan, but the girl's strange ability tends to draw her into trouble whether she's aware of it or not. However, her ability proves super helpful but at the same time, places her right smack in the killer's line of vision. And now, he's after her. Several chapters are told from the killer's perspective so that was creepy and disturbing, but definitely added suspense and eeriness to the story.
I liked reading about Violet's special ability. That's definitely not one I've come across before (at least not that I can remember). When a creature is murdered, an echo is left behind. It can be a smell, a sound, a taste, a sight - everyone's is different. And Violet is drawn to them. And it's not just the victims that have imprints, it's the killers too as the killer carries the same imprint of the victim. I really enjoyed reading about Violet and her gift, but I do not envy the girl. That is probably far down on the list of super powers I would choose.
So, yeah, I loved this book for both the adorable romance and the girl with a definitely different special ability aspect. Adding it to the favorites! Can't wait to read the sequel. I can only hope that Violet and Jay stay as cute as they are now and that there is no dreaded love triangle (please, please no!). Highly recommended!
Quote: “I was just waiting for you to want me as much as I wanted you.” His words were quiet but carried one hell of an impact. “I knew we were going to be together; it was just a matter of time. I kept hoping that you would figure it out. But for a smart girl, you’re a little dense, Vi. I kept bringing up Lissie Adams, and showing you the notes she was leaving me, hoping that you’d get pissed enough to finally admit how you felt about me.” SWOON!(less)
