I didn't feel that reading it from Darcy's perspective added anything new to the story. And really, this is more of a compliment to the original P&P: Even though it's told primarily from Elizabeth's POV, you don't come away from it feeling like you're missing any of the story. Not planning on reading any more P&P re-tellings, I'll just read the original when I want me some Elizabeth and Darcy. (less)

They LOVE them. It takes us about 3 days to finish a book. But if Jack and Jeremy had their way, we'd read the whole thing all at once. They're always disappointed when I say we're done for the night. Thanks to my friend for lending them to us, huge success :) (less)

And everyone had weird, hard-to-pronounce names. I really hate weird names, it gets so exhausting after a while. Not planning on continuing this series. (less)

This made me want to go back and read them all again as there were lots of references to things that had happened in previous books, and honestly I can't remember six books worth of stuff (plus the Alpha and Omega series). So I had a bit of a hard time following the plot. Nevertheless, still loved it. And as usual, can't wait for the next book.(less)

Swaggart (or whatever guy happened to be talking to Poppy) 'winked' in every other paragraph. There ARE other expressions besides 'oh my heck!'. There ARE other ways to describe a not-very-nice woman besides calling her a 'wench'. And a few too many exclamation points imo.
That being said, this was a sweet indulgent read. And though I do have issues with the writing, can I just say she is quite adept at putting together a kissing scene. Oh my.
I definitely recommend it. A clean and satisfying romance. Just know that once she decides on a word, she sticks with that word for the whole book :)(less)

And I just naturally don't enjoy books that are too juvenile. I like well developed, complex characters, as well as well developed, complex plot lines. This book had neither of these things.
My main complaint: the love story. Even if this love story were between two completely normal people, I would have felt that it happened way way way way too quickly. But that fact that it's between Rumplestiltskin (who has been disfigured so terribly that his own parents faked his death and banished him from sight) and the most beautiful maiden in all the land makes it just plain ridiculous. I mean, she's making out with him and declaring her love after knowing him for A DAY. I realize that the lesson being taught here is that real beauty is on the inside and it doesn't matter what one looks like on the outside. But I'm sorry, no matter how pure and nice and well intentioned a girl is, she's not going to fall in love with this hideously deformed man in ONE DAY. She's not. That's not to say that she CAN'T fall in love with him, but there has to be a 'getting-to-know-you' phase and a 'development-of-friendship-and-trust' phase that happens over a period of time for this relationship (or any relationship) to be plausible.
This was a very short book (probably because of it's intended audience) and maybe that's why she moved things along so quickly.
I'm giving it two stars instead of one because if I had a child that enjoyed reading fairytales, I would hand this over to them without hesitation and I'm sure they would love it. But for me personally this book just didn't do it. (less)

I am never in the mood for depressing and would never had read this if I'd known it was about anorexia (didn't read the synopsis, got it cheap on my kindle). That being said I'm not sorry I read it. Books like this are always eye opening and make me grateful for my healthy body and mind.
I was kind of annoyed with the writing style. Just felt like the author was trying so hard to be dramatic, and yet at the same time it was all very monotone. I got use to it after a while and it wasn't as distracting but nevertheless, the writing style was a bit much for me. (less)

Really enjoyed this one though, very satisfying ending.(less)

A lot of times short stories leave me wanting because they're so... short. But I thought this one was perfect. We get to see some flashbacks from Everneath but from Coles point of view, plus we get to really see what's in Cole's heart. I know he's the bad guy but it's hard to hate a bad guy in love, eh? Firstly, I didn't like Anne. No personality, no back bone. I felt like I was reading about a teenager. At 28 years old you'd think she'd have herself figured out a little better than that. Although this isn't necessarily the author's fault because Anne isn't really much of a character in the original Persuasion either.
Secondly, the dialogue was kind of corny and unrealistic. People don't talk like that.
Thirdly, all the stalker business... was that even in the original?? I have no memory of that storyline. But that's not what bothered me. It's fine with me if she strays from the original a bit. But she spent pretty much the whole seceond half of the book on the stalker, only to have it end in a very anticlimactic way. I didn't really understand the point of it all.
Fourthly, too preachy. Preachy novels annoy me, even when it's my own faith doing the preaching. If you want your book to be about church members, at least make the people real and their conversations real. Spontaneous spouting of scriptures is not something I've ever encountered in normal life, except at church during a meeting.
It had potential but overall didn't quite do it for me. (less)

But...
Then I saw that he came out with this e-book, it's gotten really good reviews, plus I'm a sucker for prequels. And I've gotta say I'm glad I gave him one more chance, he's finally got a little of his spark back. I've read all thirteen books in this series and it was so fun to go back to the very beginning and see where it all began. It almost makes me want to read them all again and then read this one again just to understand everything better. Almost. Maybe I would if the last 6 books hadn't been so awful.
My main complaint with this one (which is my main complaint for ALL of his books) is that it could have been about half as long. For example: there's a part where Magda decides to go visit the Spiritist who lives deep in the Keep. It literally takes about four chapters of walking through passage ways, walking down steep steps, and passing through corridors to finally reach the Spiristist. Alright, we get it, the Keep is a really really big place, move it along already! He explains and re-explains and OVER explains every little last thing. And they're usually things you already know. I did a lot of skimming whenever there were big, long, descriptive paragraphs because I knew he wasn't telling me anything new.
I feel like Magda and Merritt's story isn't over yet, so I'm actually hoping for another book about them. We shall see. (less)

It was only $3.00 on Kindle and sounded like a great story, so I went for it.
It was original, compelling, entertaining, and very clean.
On the downside I wish there had been some character developement, especially with Emmeline and her father. I appreciate the fact that she just jumped right into the story but I couldn't really feel the shock and heartache and all the emotions she would feel at being so suddenly ripped from her home and her father (on page 2) because I knew NOTHING of her, her home, her father or their relationship.
Also, many many many typos in the Kindle version. It was a bit ridiculous.

It was very fun, just like her stand ups. I kind of wish it had been more of a story about her life. I mean, not her WHOLE life, but there was a chapter where she talked about being a judge on American Idol and I really found that interesting. But that was the only chapter like that. All the rest were very random topics - in one she tells about a dream she claims she had, a whole lotta nothin about nothin, skipped over most of it. Another was her random thoughts as she sits on a beach - VERY RANDOM THOUGHTS. I really enjoyed the gambling chapter (hahahaha). Overall a fun, funny book. (less)

A depressing series though. I was glad and a little relieved to see that Josephine had some happiness with Bonaparte in this one, but knowing that it ends badly makes it hard to enjoy. Poor Josephine did not have a happy life.
It's very interesting/amusing to read about everything they thought they knew about the human body. All of their 'cures' and treatments, and being bled and leeches... so crazy. Seems like they had a better chance of surviving if they just stayed away from the dr all together.
Here's their views on a woman who's gone through menopause: "First, one grows stout at the back of the neck, where two prominences form at the lowest cervical vertebrae. The breast become flat and hard, less spongy. The legs and arms dry up, resembling those of a man. The abdomen enlarges to the extent that the woman may appear to be pregnant. A beard often manifests itself."
I laughed for a while.
Another funny tidbit: "The young considered it fashionable to look old as well as rumpled: shirts were slept in to give the right effect, servants given new clothes to "break in".
Definitely an interesting time. And now on to the third and final book.(less)

If someone not so talented at writing had written this story, it could have come across as silly and ridiculous. But Brodi is good enough that instead of it being silly it's real and believable and such a fun read.
I don't want to say too much except that I love this series and highly recommend it. It'll be a long wait for book #3 but fun to reread these in the mean time. (less)

I am NOT an expert and therefore was very confused. I honestly just didn't know what was going on most of the time. Which was frustrating because the French Revolution is something that I really would like to learn more about and understand why it happened (which was the whole reason for reading this in the first place). There were many many characters and, except for Rose and her immediate family, I couldn't remember who they even were and what their role in everything was. Two more books in the series, not sure if I'll continue. A friend lent them to me so I sorta feel like a should. (less)

Was not expecting to love it as much as I did, stayed up way way way too late in night to read it. Fabulous premise. I do wish the plot twists hadn't been quite so obvious. I pretty much had this thing figured out from the get-go, which was a little disappointing as I love a good surprise. Nevertheless I loved where the author took the story and it's characters.
A little cheesy, a little (or rather a lot) predictable, and little too much use of the word "were" (you'll know what I mean if you read it) but a fabulous and unique Robin Hood retelling. I highly recommend :)(less)
