It was well researched and compelling, but the story-telling style did annoy me as it made me feel like parts were fabricated to glue the facts together.(less)

My heart went out to Lionel (nicknamed Black Jesus) a young marine who has returned home from war blind, and the young dancer Gloria, who stumbles into his life. Even though the circumstances are sad, the story is ultimately full of hope and I really enjoyed it. (less)

The main characters had a lot of depth and were well developed. The story was fast paced – there was plenty of action the whole way through and lots of romance too. (less)

The bizarre elements of the plot would have worked better on screen as they weren't overly convincing in the way they were written. It felt a bit like the author was trying to introduce extremely fearful events but they weren't described in a terrifying or suspenseful way. I did like the characters but I was left feeling like I didn't get to know them fully and was unable to get inside their heads.(less)

His depictions of imperfect yet beautiful goths and punks are so engaging and believeable. The storyline itself has less of an impact, much of the drama is trivial but the friendships are intriguing and the dialogue and banter is realistic and comical. I could pour over the art work alone for hours.(less)

Garcia's art work makes it extra special and her dark, whimsical style is perfectly suited to Carroll's enchanting tale! Having just read the original story for the first time I was surprised by how magically grim and hilarious it is. But to be honest, without the enticing art work, I probably wouldn't have bothered.(less)

Mindy is insightful, quirky and hilarious but she's also honest and upfront. I loved that she's able to laugh at herself and I felt that this book was really all about staying true to yourself. I don't normally go for memoirs or biographies but I loved how this was set out in short essays making it a quick read and the balance of humour and insight was just right.

If you're interested in the Schappelle Corby case this is a must read and has basically completely put me off even considering visiting Bali. Even if she is guilty, which I'm not convinced she is, the sentence is horrendous and sickening.(less)

Although I found it to be fairly slow paced and convoluted to begin with the story was increasingly engrossing. I was particularly fond of Lisbeth - but actually, all of the lead characters were interesting and engaging. And while the violence was appalling, it wasn't gratuitious or off-putting. (less)

The pace was much more satisfying and I was pleased that Lisbeth has a far more integral role - the reader is given greater insight into her background, and her head. Like the first book in the series I found I had to concentrate hard to keep track of the myriad of characters but overall I love the direction the stories heading in!(less)
