Read enough of the Warhammer Fantasy and the s...moreI picked up this book mainly because I like the Warhammer Fantasy genre and it takes place in Hochland. Read enough of the Warhammer Fantasy and the setting itself becomes a character in its own way. The story, as usual, times are desperate for the empire particularly the province of Hochland. Again as usual the forests are crawling with Beastmen. Unusual in this case is the Beastmen have been using tactics to drive the armies of Hochland to the breaking point. Mercenary Captain Eriksson comes to Hochland to capitalize on this desperate situation. Buying the freedom of prisoners, Eriksson forms a mercenary band of; thieves, cutthroats, murderers, rapers, and all around ne'er do wells. Eriksson must lead his band into one bloody battle after another fighting a foe that is warped my the forces of chaos itself. Robert Earl wrote a good book, but to be honest the ending was a little weak and predictable. It seemed abrupt like it was cut short, that is what kept it from a 5 star review. Hopefully it is the first of a series I look to more of Captain Eriksson and The Gentlemen's Free Company of Hergig. (less)

Ulrika does a bit of spying for her mistress, and agrees to work with one of the witch hunter who doesn't recognize Ulrika is a vampire herself. (less)

Growing bored of the day to day rule, Malekith sets out across the see to the elven colonies to look for adventure which he desires greatly. After leading the defense of the forsworn colony against an orc invasion, he expands the colonies and forges an alliance with a race the elves never met before, the Dwarves. After a while there is little left to explore and little adventure to be had. So Malekith sets off on an expedition to the Chaos Wastes. Finding a circlet laced with great magical power in a pre human settlement, Malekith spend decades mastering the powers of the circlet before returning home to lead the elven armies against his own mother and her Slaaneshi pleasure cults. Taking his own mother prisoner she slowly twists him even further till he willingly commits treachery against Bel Shanaar and attempts to become the new Phoenix King, as is his right. Walking into the fires of Asuryan is the final test for all those who would claim the title of Phoenix King. Malekith makes his attempt, but the fires reject him and burn him horribly.

Through all of this Gotrek wonders if he will ever find his doom, Felix wonders if Gotrek's doom will be the end of him and if he is crazy for standing at the Slayer's side for as long as it takes. This series was started by William King and is continued by Nathan Long. These were the first books of the Warhammer/Black Library brand that I had read and got me started reading Warhammer novels.
