They would even be tempted to read ahead to find out more about what was going to happen to Ivan and his pals! You know it's a gripping book if 9 and 10 year olds want to continue reading!!!
This book is so inspiring to anyone who ever feels like there is no escape from an impossible or negative situation. It felt very raw, not covering up the reality about death. It was an emotional ride filled with laughs, tears, and satisfaction and relief. Ivan, who I feel did lose hope for a moment after a tradgey occured, was relentless and determined to change things by fighting for what he believed is right. Ivan did not lose hope and in the end, I was in tears again, but not of sadness, but joy!
This book should be read by every one, adult or child! It's really a great story. ...more

I think I enjoyed this compendium the most because the TV show isn't on this part yet, so not really knowing what to expect made it suspenseful for me. The only thing that I absolutely hated was (spoiler alert) the way that one of the coolest bad ass characters in the show, died in such a weak way. Abraham deserved a much better death than an unsuspecting arrow going through his skull. I hated that Glen died, but at least it was by the hands of a psycho who gets off on rubbing a baseball bat he named Lucille covered in barbed wire against his genitals. He died a manly mans way unlike Abraham.
Speaking of that maniac, Neegan, he was a totally wacky silly crazy dude. I couldn't get enough of his foul remarks he made, even after becoming prisoner. He is my favorite bad guy of the entire Walking Dead series for sure. I actually think he was on to something kind of Robin Hood-esque. Taking from other communities to help out his own. I know he went about it in the wrong way by bulling them, but he was doing what he thought was best for his people. I can sympathize with him, just like I did with the governor who also thought he was doing what was best for his people. Same with how I always agreed and sympathized with Rick who was always doing what's best for him and his people.
My absolute favorite part of this book was Carl changing into the badass that he now is. I loved how he has the guts to sneak into Neegan's community and try to kill him, then taking Neegan's advice on not wearing the eye mask, and ultimately being comfortable in his own skin. Carl could potentially become the next Neegan or governor and I think that Rick is trying to prevent that by staying with him and not letting him become an adult. But I also think that Carl can continue to grow into a civilized person and still be cautious of the world. It's smart to never let your guard down with all the craziness going on outside their walls.
The ending was really sad, especially for one character who was pregnant. I'm very curious to know what is going to happen next. Will Rick want to fight the Whisperer's (who by the way had me completely losing my mind at first. I actually thought the zombie's had mutated into being able to talk and use weapons!) when there is a whole boat load of them, and risk losing a lot of good people. Will they heed the Whisperer's wishes and stay away from "their lands". Or will the Whisperer's attack Rick's group just to prove a point to them? I don't know but I certainly can't wait to find out!!
Also, in the last chapter, Michonne was looking really awesome in her pirate getup! ...more

I'm glad to be all caught up to where the midseason finale just stopped and now I can continue reading on in the 3rd compendium not having any idea of what to expect!
This compendium was so good that I read it in 3 sittings and it felt like it went by so quickly, more so than the first one!
Some favorite parts of mine were when Abraham was telling the group how smart Eugene is saying that, "The thing about smart motherfers is that they sometimes they sound like crazy motherfers to stupid motherfers." He had me dying! Abraham sure does have a dirty mouth.
I also really enjoyed the relgious uncertainties throughout, like Eugene and Father Gabriel's religious discussion while walking in the woods. I question a lot of things too, so that really stood out to me. Especially if a zombie apocalypse actually happened I feel like how Maggie completely seems to have lost faith in her religion, I would assume she wouldn't be the only one. Although Gabriel still firmly believes, but hey look at the difference in these characters and what has happened to them so far.
Lastly, the best part of this book for me was seeing how 8 year old Carl has evolved. I won't spoil anything in particular, but he changes a lot and that is the most exciting thing for me to see. In the show I think his character is so intriguing, but in the comic, keeping him young is really a great because he is still growing and adapting and I think it is really awesome to see his progression. Towards the end when he nonchalantly suggests killing this other group of people and taking advantage of the trade, I was like, you go Carl!
I cannot wait to read the next installment to see what happens in this crazy world of the walking dead! ...more
