My one caveat would be the illustrations show the chimpanzees smiling @ each other in a loving manner but we are told at the end of the book that smiling means fear, not love or joy.(less)

I was prepared for this book to be a retread of the Percy Jackson series. It is not. Rick Riordan expands on his universe. Some familiar faces are here but we get different aspects of their personalities. The new characters are interesting. The adventure is nonstop. I liked to addition of Roman vs Greek versions of the gods. (less)

Some parts of the story are ok so not a total waste. Interesting idea that fell apart.(less)

Children enjoy the idea of the baby outwitting everybody. It adds a different dimension to tale. I would have liked to see a better flowing story but overall it is wonderful. The children love the beautiful Nordic illustrations. Jan Brett provides additional material to go along with the story on her website. My kids love making the gingerbread house which comes complete with a gingerbread baby!(less)

Rose at one point expresses her frustration at not being in the middle of the action. I was frustrated too! This was the last book of Rose's story, even if not of the series. She needed to be able to use all of her strengths. Later in the book, Lissa is put in a similar situation. The book deals a lot with court politics, and not so much fighting the Strigoi. Still, even though it was not my favorite academy book, it is still much better than most of the books out there. I love the heroine's grit and determination. I am looking forward to the next book!(less)

Their paths intertwine during the turmoil of the French Revolution. The French revolution comes alive in this novel. The idea is interesting and I enjoyed the characters. However, I would have liked to see more character development.(less)

A girl who survives the end of civilization by nuclear war. She will be key to the rebuilding of the world. I enjoyed the book but felt it was overly padded. Most of the characters are well developed but I felt the Colonel and Roland were one dimensional. The supernatural fight between good and evil was interesting. As many readers have noted, it is similar in feel to The Stand by Stephen King. However, unlike some readers I do not feel this is a better book. An interesting read.(less)

Andrea is actually Virginia Dare from the lost Virginia Roanoke Colony. I found the premise intriguing. The action is fast but the author includes much historical information. The author explores some moral ambiguity with what makes a course of action just. I think kids who read this will want to find out more about the lost colony. I did think some of the tracer actions were confusing. (less)

The book will be challenging for some as it weaves its story. We begin with Jacob finding the mirror that will send him into the dark world of fairy tales. The story flash forwards many years later in the the next chapter to Jacob on a misson to save his younger brother, who has just now followed him into the mirror. Jacob's years of living in this land will help him in his quest. The story is not linear but I think it adds dimension. The world is wonderfully imagined. All of the characters have depth with the exception of Will. The characters are all in their twenties so the book could just have easily been placed in adult. However, the book will appeal to teens. There is some hints to Jacob's past involvements but nothing at all graphic.(less)

He has been on the run his entire life. They search for he and his kin. Each will be hunted in order. The first three are dead. He is number four. They are coming for him. Good versus evil. I like the small town setting of the action and the romance. I also liked how the characters grow during the book. His rival at the school becomes his ally. (less)

What I liked about the book: The author does a good job of recreating Victorian England. Tessa, the heroine grows more independent as the book unfolds. The universe Clare has created is more fleshed out, the factions of human, demon, vampire and angel are more fully explored.
What I did not like: I felt the plot felt contrived. I was not surprised by who the villain turned out to be. The characters seemed to be transposed out of The Mortal Instruments series.(less)

I liked the author's take on the werewolf mythology. It was interesting how some of the characters embraced being a wolf. I am not a big werewolf fan since it doesn't seem really plausible to have a romance with a wolf. However, the author makes it believable. I liked the scenes were Grace sees Sam as a wolf and they stare across the distance. I liked the literary references in the book and Sam's artistic nature. I loved when he taught Grace that poetry is not just about the words in the poem, but how the words flow together as sound.(less)

Each story is simple but funny and the characters act just like the kids would expect them too. I frequently use one of these books during my story time. Toddlers can follow along with the plot, the older preschoolers enjoy it, and the wry humor is a hit with parents.(less)
