The killer, 522, has been killing people, calling in anonymous tips and then plants evidence on an innocent victim so they are accused of the crime. The question is, where does he get the information about these innocent victims so he can get the evidence to plant? Answer? SSD. This company gets all sorts of computerized data on people and sells it to other companies. Keeping up with federal and state privacy laws, of course. When Arthur, Lincoln's cousin, is caught up in 522's scheme, to be convicted of rape and murder, Lincoln decides to investigate the case, with the help of all the usual characters, Amelia, Ron, Mel and Lon.
There are 2 things I love about Deaver's books. The first is the author's style of putting the reader inside the killer's head throughout the book. Not many mystery writers do this. I think because they may be afraid it will give clues away but Deaver has a talent of helping the reader see through the eyes of the killer which helps pull you deeper into the story. The other thing I like is the way he sets up the reader into thinking the killer has the edge and the plot is headed for a bad scene and then BOOM, Amelia or Rhythm have jumped ahead and figured something out while you were off in some other character's head. Then the story takes an unexpected twist. Deaver's books are loaded with interesting information, (like identity theft in this one) as well as, suspense and drama. It is rare for me to rate a Deaver book anything less than a 4 or 5. I've read every one of the Lincoln Rhyme series and if you are a thriller-mystery type reader, you don't want to miss adding this series to your repertoire. Deaver is one of the best.(less)

Rhyme will need all his reason--and his considerable stock of high-tech tools--about him to solve this latest brain-twister: a serial killer with method to his madness. In tried and true thriller fashion, the killer's crimes are described in lurid detail, as is the astounding technological equipment with which Rhyme examines the evidence--everything from an energy-dispersive x-ray unit to a mass spectrometer. Every fictional detective has his or her gimmick, from Sherlock Holmes's violin to Nero Wolf's orchids, and Rhyme is no exception. He is a quadriplegic who can move nothing but a single finger." I really liked this book. I think the quad angle is ingenious. I love Rhyme. I enjoyed the tech and I think the character development is decent. I have seen the movie but don’t remember enough to rate it. (less)

They have only one clue: the madman has a tattoo of the Grim Reaper waltzing with a woman. Rhyme must rely on his wits and intuition to track the elusive murderer through New York City -- knowing they have only forty-eight hours before the Coffin Dancer strikes again." Another good one by Deaver (less)

Rhyme is scheduled to have surgery which could give him more movement. It can also make it worse. While they are waiting to have the surgery, they are called in by a cousin of a colleague to help them find a teenage boy who is accused of murder and kidnapping. There are several twists and turns to this story. The actual location is the north east part of NC. (less)

(#4 in the Lincoln Rhyme Series) This was about The Ghost (snakehead). He was smuggling Chinese immigrants to the US. The Coastguard was coming to board the boat so he blew it up. 2 Families survived. The Ghost went on the mission to find them. Lincoln and Amelia were trying to get there first. This book had a lot of interesting information on the Chinese, Chinatown in NY etc. I enjoyed reading about the friendship that developed between Lincoln and Sonny Li. Lincoln is finally loosening up. This was very well written. I even liked the end! (less)

It definitely followed the Deaver formula but the magic and illusion references were very interesting. Deaver is a master. This was about an illusionist who was killing people. The murders were actually a diversion. The identification of the murderer was also a diversion. Kara, a local magician, was used to help give some great information on illusion. Deaver does an excellent job with the suspense and also intermingling the character development of the series. There were twists right up until the very end. This by far was one of his best. (less)

Like most of the previous books in the series, this book takes place in the NYC area. Harlem in particular. This young teenage black girl, Geneva, is researching one of her ancestors who was in the civil war, owned a farm in “upstate” and played a big part in the development of the 14th amendment. He was set up and accused of stealing money. He was being chased through the streets and managed to escape by jumping in the river. While Geneva is reading about this in the library, a man tries to kill her. Enter Lincoln and Amelia. The story takes off. You are lead to think you know where the story is going and then, surprise! A twist and a turn. This book has many. I thought the only slight weakness was, it might have had too many. It was on the verge of becoming unbelievable. There are too many bad guys. The guy you are led to believe is a bad guy, turns out to be Geneva’s father. The lady you are led to believe is a counselor, turns out to be one of the bad guys. This is the unbelievable part. How a school would let a perfect stranger into the school who is pretending to be a counselor. I don’t think that would happen. Especially in a highschool in Harlem. Also, what you think is the motive for murder, the history of her ancestor, turns out it isn’t. I love the information Deaver provides about New York City. Whether it’s the detailed description of a specific burrow, or the history. It’s fascinating. This book ends on an exciting note. Lincoln, after months of a strict exercise program, is getting some movement in his hand. This book has references to Christopher Reeve at the beginning. I read where Deaver’s people were talking to Reeve’s people about possibly filming the Coffin Dancer, although, Deaver says he never met Reeve. (less)

The Rhyme series just gets better and better. This is the 7th. This book is so full of twists and turns it kept my attention till the very end. You think you know what is going to happen and then twist. The story is about “The Watchmaker”. He recruits a partner who is a rapist. You think he is a serial killer taking revenge on witnesses who didn’t do anything when his wife was dying as a result of getting hit by a car in NYC. The story goes from there. Amelia is working another cop that leads to dirty cops. At one point the 2 cases intertwine but then they go their separate ways. This is the book where Amelia learns her father was crooked. Or was he? She is also thinking of quitting and letting Pulaski take her place working for Rhyme. I like the part he plays. He is getting to be a more prominent character in the series. The odd thing about this book is the bad guy essentially gets away. Also introduced in this book is Kathryn Dance. She brings in the kinetics side of investigating that is very interesting. I hope we hear more about her in the coming books. This was another great one.(less)

It was interesting. I always learn something when I read a Deaver book. This is one of my favorite series. In this one, Rhyme and Sacks and their team is on a case involving someone who is diverting electricity to electrocute people in NYC. The manipulation revolves around Algonquin Electric, the major electric company in the city. In the background, Rhyme is also on the tail of another criminal. Someone who slipped thru their fingers in one of the previous cases. This book is also a turning point for Rhyme’s personal life. I am looking forward to the next book in the series to learn more about it. I highly recommend this series. I don’t think I’ve rated any of these books lower than a 4. (less)
