He takes a longer term view focused on real sustainability and in doing so he does does away with conventional business paradigms where the goal is growth at any cost. Patagonia as told by Chouinard is an example for the rest of the world with a dedication to the highest level of quality and the lowest amount of side-effects, environmentally and socially. Once you have read this, morality alone should convince you that there is no other way of doing business.
The story Chouinard tells is reminiscent of Ricardo Semler's story in the Seven-Day Weekend but whereas Semler's stories tell of an anecdotal success, Chouinard rolls out a comprehensive philosophy that is the basis for all of Patagonia's action and takes Semler's principles to their logical conclusion.
I am not an environmentalist in the traditional sense of the word but change is necessary. I think we can and will live in harmony with the environment if we employ a positive world changing outlook, technological progress, market forces and cradle to cradle thinking in a good way. Chouinard gives example after example of these strategies and the change they have created. Patagonia is both a profitable company and an exemplary environmentalist at the same time. They show how doing things right can be more fun, better for the world and cheaper in the long run.
Personally this book has persuaded me that conservation of nature and the last pieces of wilderness is important and that the resources we consume should be in balance with the planet harvested organically and sustainably. In business the example of Patagonia has strengthened my resolve to be in business myself. For the same reasons: to do what you believe in, do good and to lead by an example others can follow.
Finally finished this book. It was ridiculously slow going. It is written intentionally obtuse for some effect but it mostly misses the point.

The characters are caricatural, the story lacks depth or meaning and pewters out into a nothing. There's not much good to say about this book. Colourful stuff happens, but most of it is grossly unbelievable even in the mock universe of the book.
If you want this level of absurd in a decent story, read “Perdido Street Station”.

An excellent reference with thoughtful and in most cases very recent examples illustrating the patterns.
As with any design book this is not complete but covers most of the bases extensively and a lot in it has been motivated thoroughly but remains discutable. Let neither of those put you off.

Also in this part of the world one of the more unknown love stories. For some reason Persian literature does not get equal treatment in the school curriculum.
When I started reading this book I braced myself for an archaic treatment, dull and difficult to read. Much to my surprise the translation is very readable and has a good pace while maintaining —as far as I can tell— a high fidelity.
A high pace is quite necessary to carry you along with the ravings and rantings of a wandering madman. His madness notwithstanding Majnun's plight is heartbreaking.

Page after page of excerpts from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and B'Tselem reports describing indiscriminate killing by government forces don't make for the easiest of reading material. I can only read so many accounts of children getting shot through the head before I am numbed down.
That being said, this is an important book for two reasons: 1. The authors clearly show that regarding the Occupied Territories and the Palestinian people Israel is committing grave violations of human rights and international law as a matter of policy and as a result of that policy engages in indiscriminate killing and grossly disproportional acts of violence. 2. Omission after omission, fact after fact and selective quote after selective quote the authors expose the biased journalism —if you can call it that— the New York Times practices to cover up and wash clean the facts mentioned in 1.
Israel-Palestine on Record is extensively researched to be able to fend off the inevitable knee-jerk criticisms from the pro-Israel lobby. Anybody can follow the references and see for themselves.
Friel and Falk make an extensive argument to demonstrate what is happening: the tragedy on the ground, the wilful deception of a populace and the attrition of international law due to gross disregard.

Structured in four gateways with some repetition in each, the lessons read very much like koans with a short illustrative story and a small adjoining poem. Other than in (most?) koans the author here is known and does not hesitate to feature in some of his own stories.
Many of the Shaikh's admonitions remain as relevant today as they were back then and those that are not offer a clear window into the customs and social structures of his period.
