It's definitely a re-print of an older book. The layout is pretty poor. It's just one huge dictionary. There is no division of country or culture and both aren't consistently indicated. The amount of information for the terms varies between a lot of general stuff and one sentence definitions that don't say what the term has to do with weapons or what culture it's from.
He also gives numbers for measurements but doesn't say if they're inches or feet. The reader also has to assume that he's using the Imperial measurements, now standard only in America, and not metric.
It's pretty clear that the author expected his readers to already know what he's talking about.
Also, the organization itself is a little odd. So you have ARMOR in the 'A's and then all the armor in the world is shoved in under that one topic. No subheadings or any way to quickly find or pick out information.
The illustrations are also really confusing. They're all just shoved in where ever there was space. So there are pages where not one of the terms has anything to go with the photographs on them.
Overall, this book is pretty frustrating to use and difficult to use. It would make a good tertiary or secondary resource, but I'd recommend this being your primary source, let alone the only book you own on the topic. Go for a newer DK published book on the subject and use this as backup material, so to speak....more
This is a really great source book, not just for it’s first-rate information but for the easy-to-follow and read organization of that information. AmuThis is a really great source book, not just for it’s first-rate information but for the easy-to-follow and read organization of that information. Amulets is also thoughtfully illustrated, with captions for every photo and plate. There are over 70 black-and-white photographs and twenty color plates of groupings of amulets. There are also a couple of line drawings.
