I was given this book for Christmas to aid with the never ending question, "Where do we eat tonight?" This book is organized by regions of LA, types of meals, and more. All price ranges and ethnic types are represented. Reviews are short and to the point. I am looking forward to trying a bunch of the restaurants listed inside and saving up my pennies for some of the fancier places!(less)

It's impossible not to compare it to the first book, as it's the same concept and format. The stories, however, don't live up to the first one. I found much of the material familiar - I'd read it in blogs, seen it in the news, or...read it already in a Malcolm Gladwell book. Not a great follow up to the original and you're not missing out if you don't get to it.(less)

Each piece was just long enough to give you a sense of a unique story, without being too long or fluffed up. The stories range hugely in subject matter and even the ones that seem like they wouldn't be interesting really are. I definitely recommend this one for a compelling, not too heavy, read that might even spark your interest in some new things in life.(less)

This book looks at the Titanic disaster from the point of view of the two ships closest two it on that fateful night - the Carpathia and the Californian. Two very different stories play out on the two ships and this book looks at the men behind those stories. Definitely an interesting read and you get some insight into the history of the luxury liners, as well.(less)

I had never heard of Bernarr McFadden before and was intrigued to discover what a large figure he was in the creation of the modern fitness industry, the newspaper business, and beyond. As you read, you will discover his life was intertwined with many people you know as household names in history. You will find the seeds of such ideas as intermittent fasting, avoiding white starchy foods, regular exercise, and more. Inspiring men like Jack Lalanne, Joe Weider, and discovering none other than Charles Atlas, Bernarr McFadden was a man before his time.
A unique and idiosyncratic character, Bernarr McFadden's story is a tragic success story, and yet inspirational in his crusade for better human health and lifestyles. (less)

A "simple" concept that is very difficult to apply to business -- fidelity vs. convenience. This book was full of examples of the fidelity vs. convenience balance in real business scenarios. It was well written - a quick, but very informative read. This was one of my favorite business books and I would highly recommend it.(less)

I wouldn't particularly recommend it to anyone - just nothing exciting about it.(less)

And yet, the whole book is strangely compelling and often quite creepy. I found myself very anxious while reading it, waiting for something to happen, almost to the point of wanting to skip ahead just to get to the part where something "happens." Ultimately, this is an amazing father-son story, both bleak and loving.(less)

More than anything, this book is a series of character studies and is very satisfying in that regard. The race at the end of the book, I found a little anti-climactic, but overall I enjoyed the journey this book took me on and it made me think differently about running, human evolution, and what it means to be a human being.(less)
