Reaping Me Softly is the first installment in a new trilogy by author Kate Evangelista- some of you may recognize Kate as the author of Fate. I haven't yet had the opportunity to read Fate but I have read some great reviews for the novel, so I was really excited to be getting the chance to read the newest release this author had to offer. Reaping Me Softly was a great start to a promising new YA series!
The book revolves around the paranormal division of reapers (hence the title Reaping Me Softly). I really loved this story's take on the "Reaping Community"- it was not only an interesting world to explore, but it was unique enough to set it apart from other reaper novels I've read.
I'm sure by now you all pretty much now that I'm a sucker for the paranormal romances- there's something really sexy about being in love with a non-human (although, if this were true in real life I probably wouldn't find it too sexy....more like "I'm-gonna-run-now-and-scream-at-the-top-of-my-lungs *sprints*") but nonetheless I love it in fiction! The relationship between Niko and Arianne was incredibly sweet, and being able to read through both of their POVs allows you to connect with them better as a couple. My one major concern with the book was how ridiculously accepting Arianne is when she finds out about Niko's true identity. She was just so nonchalant about everything- it was like she was deciding what to order for take out rather than trying to figure out what non-human being her wanna-be-boyfriend was! I understand that over-dramatic heroines can be annoying, but I just found it really unrealistic for Arianne to be completely unconcerned with the fact that Niko is a reaper! With all that being said, I will point out that Niko had no trouble in making me swoon with some of his incredible lines *faints*
There is also a secondary relationship in this novel that almost (emphasis on the almost) got me more excited than Niko and Arianne's, and it was between Arianne's sister and best friend (Carrie and Ben). Their ending is really sad but the small glimpses we get between the two of them was really great- I'm a huge fan of the Carrie and Ben duo!
Overall I'm really glad I read this book- it was a really great first installment for what I hope to be an even greater trilogy! Reaping Me Softly is a quick, fun, emotional, and swoon-packed YA read for anyone looking for a good paranormal romance! Book two can't come fast enough :) Have you read Reaping Me Softly?
