I guess the publishers are trying to draw in romance readers, but the relationship in the novel is decidedly unromantic. In fact it is down right disturbing at times, but in a way that I think is true to the characters. But the alternate history world created here is truly fascinating, infused with the stereotypical steam-punk contraptions. These devices are presented in a way that makes their existence in the world believable rather than a wink-nudge novelty.(less)

I loved the way in which Carriger wrapped up the various plot lines without making it seem like the lives of the characters were ending. I can only hope that there will be glimpses of some of my favorites (like Biffy) when the spin-off series starts next year.(less)

It was a more tightly crafted novel than some of the Carriger's previous work. Sophronia is covertly recruited into a finishing school that trains girls in (as the title indicates) both etiquette and espionage. She, along with a varied assortment of friends, works to solve a mystery. The series has a little of a Harry Potter-ish vibe in that regard. Sophronia is such a refreshing YA heroine. She is completely capable without being mopey or depressed. I can't wait to read more of her adventures. (less)
