I didn't give it more stars because there is no story. It is a random assortment of dogs doing different things. So while it helps him learn to read, I'm not sure that it encourages a love of or interest in reading as much as other early readers.(less)

Now...moreI can recall reading this Dr. Seuss book for the first time and feeling so much pride. It was the first "real" book I was able to read on my own. Now over 25 years later my oldest read it for the first time last night and felt the same kind of pride. The sheer staying power of this book is amazing.
From the position of a cognitive scientist I am in awe of how the book manages to take phonemic awareness, which is key to literacy skills, and make it so fun, which is key to loving reading. (less)
