It's hard to describe this book. It's about life and death, comedy and tragedy, good and evil, the paradoxes of our existence in this world spoken into being by the Great Author. He still speaks all around us, if we stop to look and listen. NOTES FROM THE TILT-A-WHIRL makes me want to listen even more. Sometimes I felt like I was reading Annie Dillard, sometimes Donald Miller, sometimes the book of Job. The book is nonlinear, artistically written, inspired by art (mostly of the God-made variety, with quite a few references to the man-made kind). I was never sure what to expect on the next page. I was sad when I was finished reading because I will never again be able to read it for the first time.(less)

Julia Child is about much more than French cooking. She lived a life of adventure, love, humor, travel, passion, and dedicated friendship…and along the way, she cooked. This book is a pleasant, engaging read about her years in France and beyond with her husband, Paul (with whom she served in US intelligence in Kunming in the 40s!). (less)

A captivating story of a woman's year experiencing arctic winter and polar night. Her account of life in Spitsbergen is fascinating, but reading it confirmed that I made the right choice not to experience for myself a full year in arctic Alaska--I am definitely a tropical personality, not an arctic one. Ritter's writing (and Degras's English translation) is engaging but poetic, introspective but not sentimental, descriptive of the arctic landscape but not gushy.(less)
