I'm going to recommend this book to everyone! Guys, these book has gotten awards for a reason! Sure, I love pretty much every fantasy book, and while I loved the fantasy elements, that's not why I want to rave and rave about this book! This book has an amazing plot twist that you can both see coming, yet not see coming! That doesn't really make sense, but read the book ,and you'll know it's true. I love plot twists in books and this one is probably one of my all-time favorites. Of course, I liked pretty much everything about this book, not just the plot twist.
If you want a great fantasy with a mystery and a great plot twist, read this book! And, yes, it's technically middle-grade, but do not turn your nose up at it just for that fact!(less)

MY THOUGHTS I feel so awkward. The average rating for this book on Goodreads is 3.27. Almost every review I see for this book is a negative review. But I absolutely loved this book. When I was reading this book, I was very confused by this. I kept seeing this amazing and imaginative book, while a majority of people would see the opposite. Sometimes, when this happens, a seed of doubt plants in my brain and I begin thinking that the book wasn't as great as I thought. But this time, I'm sticking to my original thoughts and feelings on the book. I remember how much I enjoyed reading this and seeing bad reviews shouldn't change that. Anyway, just wanted to get that out of the way.
I originally wanted to read this book due to multiple reasons.
-The awesome cover -Gender-bending -The fact that the author is young -The awesome sci-fi premise This book was actually better than I expected (mostly because I had very low expectations due to the ratings). I thought this book was very imaginative! This book was not only a sci-fi, but a fantasy as well. The author had to come up with the fantasy world as well as the sci-fi elements and the imagination involved in that is astounding! And I was incredibly engrossed in this book. There was so much happening and I was really interested in what was going on. Sure, some parts were slow, but that oddly didn't bother me. And, of course, I also loved the gender-bending (although I wished it lasted longer!)
The only issue I had was the ending. I hated the ending. I hated the last chapter because of a certain thing that happened (view spoiler)[Did Fox really have to die?!?! (hide spoiler)] But my main issue is the Epilogue. I felt that it was pointless, unnecessary, and honestly didn't fit in with the rest of the book. I also pretty much already knew that what happened in the epilogue would eventually happen, so I didn't really see the point in spelling it out for everyone. I was also under the impression that this would be a series and the epilogue hurt any chance of that (unless there's a companion book). But, to be honest, I generally hate epilogues.
IN CONCLUSION I'm in the minority here, but I really did enjoy this book. The idea was interesting, imagination, and a little bit strange. I basically liked everything about this book except the ending. I just can't stand the ending. MY THOUGHTS It's The Winner's Curse all over again. The Winner's Curse was an over-hyped book all over the blog world before it even came out! The Kiss of Deception had the same thing happen. ALL THE BLOGS were raving about this book! So I, of course, had extremely high expectations for this book! But having high expectations is a bad thing because it's very hard to reach those expectations, so you generally end up at least a little bit disappointed. I was disappointed. I don't know, I enjoyed this book, but I thought this would become a new favorite, but it didn't. I can't rave and gush about this book because, while I enjoyed it, that's basically it.
I did find this book extremely original, though, and for the first half, I thought I was going to be in the same boat as those other bloggers. The story has a majority point-of-view following Lia, but their are two other points-of-view. Two strangers meet her, at the same time, one of whom is The Prince, the other is The Assassin. You get their points-of-view from time to time, but you don't know who is who! I loved this part! It made me suspicious and screwed up my mind a bit, but I love it when authors do that! It's such a original idea and it flowed together! But, when the mystery is all figured out, I began to lose interest.
I don't know why. Maybe it's because my favorite aspect was done with, but I just wasn't as into the book. My main issue was just that I couldn't connect to any of the characters. They felt flat for some reason. Again, I don't know why. And I still liked the book, but I just wasn't enjoying it as much anymore.
IN CONCLUSION This book is original and very unique, but beware of the hype-monster! My expectations for this book were much much higher than possible, so I was a bit disappointed. I do recommend this book, as I did enoy iy. It's great for fantasy fans and those who just want something different.
THE RUN-DOWN A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.
Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.
The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?
MY OPINION This book seems lit a hit or miss book. Meaning that everyone seems to either love it or hate it. I'm more of the former on this. I found the story to be interesting and I was really into what was going on (I read it in one sitting!). The world-building was also very good in the way that I understood what was happening. To be honest, though, I'm not sure what caused me to not give this book a higher rating. Was it the romance? No. I thought that I didn't give a higher rating due to the romance, but looking back, the romance didn't really bug me. It did bug me that there was a tiny love triangle, but other than that, I was okay with the romance. (view spoiler)[Although, I am disappointed that both love interests already knew that Alex was a girl! Where's the fun in that! (hide spoiler)] Maybe because it didn't have a fantasy feel? This sounds more likely. For some reason, his felt more like a dystopian than a fantasy. Sure, there was magic, but not much. And the whole tyrant king thing made it seem more dystopian for some reason. (Maybe I'm just weird) But, to be honest, I probably didn't give a higher rating because it didn't wow me as much as other fantasy books.
IN CONCLUSION I did like this book and it was a good read. I just can't give a higher rating because of all of the amazing fantasy books that I've read lately and, sorry, this fantasy book couldn't beat the others. As far as recommendations go, I think you should give it a try. As I said, you either love it or hate it, it could go either way. So, just give it a try! Just in case you find a new favorite!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>(less)

ACTUAL RATING: 3.5 Stars
MY THOUGHTS I feel ashamed in the fact that I didn't enjoy this book as much as everyone else. A look on Goodreads and almost all you will see is 5 star reviews. Everyone loves this book. I liked this book, but I wouldn't go as far as loving it.
At first, it was extremely hard for me to get into this book. I wasn't quite sure what was going on and I didn't really understand the world that I just jumped into. This is a fantasy book, so it's not surprising that I had to get acclimated to this new and interesting universe. But, for some odd reason, it took me awhile to get into this book and that's the main reason as to why I just didn't love this book as much as everyone else. Why couldn't I get into it?
That's just it. I. DON'T. KNOW. For some unexplainable reason, I just had a hard to reading this book. For awhile I thought it was just as I said before, I had to get to know this world and figure out what exactly happened, but even when I understood what was going on, I still couldn't get into this book. In fact, I was starting to dread even to read it, and I was enjoying the book! But I dreaded reading it? This doesn't make any sense!
Maybe I was distracted? Not in the mood for a fantasy? I guess I just wasn't filling up to it. Closer towards the end, I got more into the book and enjoyed it so much more! I almost gave this book 4 stars because I was enjoying it, but I dropped it down due to how long it took me to get into it.
IN CONCLUSION To be honest, this was a very interesting fantasy read and I did end up enjoying it, but for some reason I just wasn't feeling up to it. I do recommend this book, since the only problem that I had was my weird mood. I will also be continuing the series! I really really liked the last third of the book (I guess I was in a better mood then) and am really interested in seeing more in this world!(less)
When a tornado goes through the trailer park where Amy...moreThis and other reviews can be found on The Psychotic Nerd
Actual Rating: 3.5 Stars
When a tornado goes through the trailer park where Amy lives, she's taken to the land of Oz. Only, it's not the happy munchkin land seen in the books and movies. It's a much darker, messed up place. Dorothy is not the farm girl anymore and has taken over Oz. Oz is a mess and the only way for things to return the way things were, is to kill Dorothy. And Amy is the lucky girl to do it.
This book was one of my most anticipated books of the year and, along with that, there's so much hype surrounding the book, but this book kind of disappointed me. I did like this book, but I expected so much more!
The first issue that I had with this book was how quickly Amy grows used to Oz. Almost right away the tornado takes Amy to Oz, and I was okay with that, but I got the feeling that Amy was okay with this way too early. At first, she believes that she's hallucinating/dreaming because she's in frexing Oz, what else would you think? But she quickly believes that, yes, she's actually in Oz. I just would think that it should take a bit longer to believe that you're in the actual land of Oz, but I guess that's just me.
It also took me awhile to get into the story and connect with any of the characters, but this is probably more my fault than the book's fault. I just happened to have read a majority of this book in public places and/or places that I had difficulty concentrating in, so that might have been why I had a difficult time getting into the book. I was, eventually, able to get into it and connect with the characters (probably when I wasn't reading in nosily public places or trying to read standing up). When this happened I was able to enjoy the story and I actually ended up really liking it! I found the screwed up world of Oz oddly intriguing! So, in the second half or so of the book, I really did enjoy it. But I did have an issue with (view spoiler)[the fact that the whole book was a lead up to Amy killing Dorothy and then... it doesn't happen. It just kind of disappointed me, since that was the whole point of the story, but I guess there would be no sequel if Dorothy actually died. (hide spoiler)]
To be perfectly honest, there wasn't much action in this book. It was mostly Amy in training and Amy waiting. That was fine, although it did get dull, I did enjoy it but I kind of wish there was...more.
The only reason why this book didn't get a higher rating is how disconnected I felt throughout the book. which is, that I said, mostly my fault, so I'll probably have to reread this sometime. I will definitely be reading the sequel! I did enjoy this book enough to continue! I also get the feeling that what I what, more action, will be in the sequel! But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined."
MY OPINION This is such an overly hyped book. Everyone is giving this book 5 glowing stars. And then there is me, giving this book a measly 3.7 stars.
The main reason as to why I didn't enjoy this book as much as everyone else is this: THE HYPE. I was expecting a book that would be awesome beyond awesome, blow my mind, knock my socks off, and basically be amazing. That is to say, I had extremely high expectations for this book. These high expectations made me dislike the book. When the book was just great but didn't knock my socks off, I was disappointed and that disappointment grew into dislike and sometimes even boredom. I am not saying that I didn't like this book, I actually enjoyed it, but not as much as I was expecting. The story was great, the world-building was amazing, I liked the romance, I liked the book! Sure, the pacing was slow throughout half of the book, but the pacing picked up. So, yes, I did enjoy the book, just not as much as I thought I would.
IN CONCLUSION Due to the hype, I was expecting to read the best book of all time, but while I liked this book, I was disappointed to see that I didn't enjoy it as much as everyone else. Yes, this is a great book, but please don't have extremely high expectations on the book because it will ruin the experience(less)

She's an immortal creature that has always protected the royal family of Samorna. She's powerful and can shift into any form. For the past 20 years she has been living in the Mistwood (forest) and now the Prince, fearing danger, has come to "recruit" her as his bodyguard. But there's a problem, Isabel doesn't remember being a Shifter and she doesn't remember how to shift...
This is how I feel about this book. I don't hate it, but I didn't particularly enjoy it.
The major reason as to why I didn't enjoy this book was the characters. All the characters felt flat to me and I felt completely disconnected from them. In fact, our main character, Isabel, was often described as "emotionless" which made it hard to actually care about her. The flatness of the characters made me feel as if the book was dragging on and on, making me bored.
I liked the premise of the book--that's why I picked it up-- but the book failed to reach the expectations. Example: The original synopsis goes on about Isabel's abilities but in the book, she has few of those abilities.
What I actually did like was how everything came together in the end. I was not expecting that twist and loved how everything came together.
IN CONCLUSION It could have been a good book, but it failed to reach my expectations I didn't enjoy this book and don't really recommend it.
I probably won't read the sequel (if you can call it that. From what I've heard, it's not really connected to this book)(less)

MY THOUGHTS I've been in a fantasy mood a lot lately. In fact, fantasy is quickly becoming my favorite genre. But one thing that I notice in fantasies is that they are often very dark. There is often tyrant governments, people living in horrible conditions, and lots and lots of death. And that is why I loved this book so much! It's a fantasy book that is also very fun! It might sound like that based on the synopsis, but, gosh darnit! THIS WAS SUCH A FUN BOOK! There was definitely a smile on my face when I was reading this book. But don't be deceived. When I say that this book was fun, I'm not saying that this book was cutesy. This book has loads of action and adventure, but with awesome, entertaining characters and humor!
IN CONCLUSION So, do I recommend this book? HECK YES! I loved this book so much and I definitely recommend it if you're looking for a fun, entertaining fantasy. I really get the feeling that I'll read this book again.(less)

MY OPINION This book took me completely by surprise. Based on both the cover and the synopsis, I was expecting a generic paranormal read. The cover is the usual paranormal cover. And in the synopsis we have both a hint of a love triangle and a hot new guy that the main character yearns for, both of these scream "generic paranormal read".
Let's make this clear: 1. This is not a paranormal read This is more of a fantasy read than a paranormal read. It not only has a fantasy feel to it, but it's nothing like your usual fantasy novel. Meaning: this is not your generic book. 2. There is no love triangle I have no idea who wrote that into the synopsis, but they're completely off the mark. "Mia is torn between two guys and two worlds in this epic, romantic fantasy." Mia is not torn between two guys, she likes only one guy. There is a brief "relationship" at the beginning of the book, but that relationship does not carry on into the story and is, in fact, never mentioned again.
Now that we got that out the way, I can say that I very much enjoyed this book. It definitely exceeded my expectations. I went into this book fully expecting the usual paranormal read. Since I have been disliking paranormal reads lately, I thought that this was to be added to the pile. The switch in genre expectations (from paranormal to fantasy) was not the only surprise. The entire storyline was unexpected!
I know, I know, I'm being extremely vague in this review, but the truth is, I can only say so much without giving away the plot. The surprise in the plot was one of the things I loved most about this book. I do not want to give the surprise away. I loved being surprised, I want you to be surprised too.
IN CONCLUSION This was a very unexpected read. I loved the fantasy elements, the imagination in it, and the surprise that came with it. I definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to what Sara Walsh will write next. (less)
