This is the first book by Kahlil Gibran that i have read. This short but elegant masterpiece is a beautiful allegory that reminded me of the teachings and doctrines of several religions such as Christianity, Buddhism, Sufism, Islam and others. I have learned a lot from reading The Prophet. The language is poetic and ethereal. It's definitely food for the soul. I especially lover the part about Love. I really felt the talent and genius of Kahlil Gibran in this book and it made me want to collect all his works. I had the best and the worst days of my life with him. Meeting and experiencing bipolar disorder in real life made me realize that this mental condition is indeed colorful. That is how I see the book The Molecules that Surround Us. It's vibrant and alive with a psychedelic portrait of how people suffering from mental disorders.
Books about mental illnesses are always interesting for me. One book that comes to mind is Augusten Burrough's wonderful memoir Running with Scissors. I found The Molecules That Surrounds Us equally enjoyable and insightful as Burrough's memoir. It showed me a glimpse of how a person with bipolar disorder lives his/her life. The depiction is astoundingly human. It touched my soul in many ways and even now, I still feel warm and good inside long after I finish reading the book.
I cannot help but sympathize with the author, Jill Treadwell. I fell in love with her while reading the book. I admire her skill in writing as well as her bravery to share her experiences, thoughts and emotions. With her book, I became more understanding of people who suffer mental disorders. We all suffer from a mental disorder in varying degrees so no one can really judge or stigmatize someone who is clinically diagnosed as mentally ill because we are all insane in our own ways.

Two stories here are based from a couple of stories I told Erin. One is "Leech" and the other is "The Thief and the Carabao". The story "My Husky and I" is based on a sexual fantasy I have. I had done some incest in my sexual life. Yes, I am very sexual and I am proud of it. That is why reading this collection is such a treat. It is dirty, diabolical and immoral. It would not be called "My Favorite Sin" for nothing. Here, you will read about twins fucking each other, a beautiful homoerotic relationship between a brother and his younger brother, a beautiful aunt and his niece doing nasty stuff, Papa and his little boy finally getting it on, and so much more. Sarsenet - A kind of very soft and fine silk. I chose this because it can also mean eloquence or skill with words. Which I would like to do with this book particularly. i want my poems to speak eloquently of taboo subjects, mix darkness with romance and eroticism.
Sarcophagus - you know what this means. But in Greek, it means flesh eater. Which is very symbolic for me. Plus, it is the shelter of corpses.

All I can say is that this book is absolutely terrific! I don;t normally read thrillers but this is different. I was fortunate to have been given the chance to review this masterpiece. Why do I say so? Because this is book is definitely many things that compose a great novel and hopefully, a masterful series.
This is the first book in the trilogy about the Vigilare, superhumans gifted with some kind of unnatural strength among things and this race may have been altogether another breed of human beings or highly-evolved humans. Anyway, the story centers about strange crimes and murders, the usual mystery of a good suspense and thriller book. But what is different is that this book shows the perspective of the would-be criminals, and also of the detectives and people who want to solve these mysterious circumstances. The characters are very human and of course, superhuman if you count the Vigilare. Gifted or cursed with being notably different, they must live their lives with an unbelievable strength that could kill without their control and obvious intent.
I also love the portrayal of women here. Some may be affected or outraged of the amount of violence, rape and abuse that women experienced in this novel but they are very relevant to the plot. What more is that it shows that women can be empowered in many ways and they are also capable of taking action against the torture that men and society are inflicting upon them. They can be vigilants, hungry for revenge and justice, the way that real vigilants would kill and murder for the sake of their beliefs and their self-righteous acts.
I won't say more. You should read it. Here, you would find another unique creation of creatures similar to the Taltos of Anne Rice, The Others of the Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko and Angelology by Daniel Trussoni. I can say more but definitely, this book conjures an entirely unique and fantastic race that would definitely rank as one of the best new species in contemporary literature. What is more, I love the way that the Vigilare could really be among us, normal-looking creatures with very human guises but possess unnatural capabilities. It makes me feel so warm inside.
I will definitely reread this book again in the future. It is so interesting and will definitely leave you wanting for more. I hope the writer is now busy making the next books or else, I will become a vigilant myself! ...more

I was attracted to its blurb about sex so I decided to read it without knowing more. There are boring times with this book but there are a lot of beautiful poetic passages that made me smile. It is a books for people who had had many lovers in their lives and these lovers still whisper to them in their daydreams, their thoughts or in times when one is bored or has nothing else to do. We miss them, and when we do, they whisper like faint memories wanting to glimmer back to existence. They whisper, and we listen with aching hearts.

I am a poet, and I firmly believe that only another poet can understand the messages of a poet he is reading. Although you are an avid reader of poetry, or you read it leisurely, there is really a big difference if you yourself is a poet making a critique of another poet's book of poetry.
Thankfully I am. And I can say that receiving the book Transmissions to the Mystic Nebula today earlier this morning was the highlight of my day. Maybe even the best thing that happened for me for like two weeks.
I love this book! I love it so much that I wanna meet Christopher and offer myself as his mentee, or his concubine, or whatever will work. His book is full of wonderful metaphors and expressive lines that can be compared to a bottle of perfume. Small, and yet if you open even the tiniest bit, an otherwordly fragrance will exude out of the bottle that will make everyone feel light and warm. That is how I felt while reading this poetry book. They are exquisitely-written. There is so much wisdom and intelligence in his poetry. The theme is the universe, particularly, space. The universe filled with stars, suns, nebulae and all galactic features. Aside from that, it also speaks of mundane things. Well, it must be so since we are also part of the universe itself.
What I like about this book is that I feel smart while I read it. He uses academic terms and scientific concepts with ease and they are all laid out in a very accessible and readable way that even a simple reader will appreciate. Although I think, some may still have to use a dictionary. However, do not be stopped by that. You will not regret picking up this book. Make sure to spend some quiet time with it because it is so beautiful that it will calm you. I just had this book for a few hours only and I already read the whole book twice. And I am ready to read it one more time. The only other writer who made me feel this way with a poetry book is my beloved friend, the celebrated gay Singaporean poet Cyril Wong. I also can feel some similarities with Rumi, the famous Persian mystic poet. Well, the title has the word mystic so it really has to be that. And Christopher definitely pulled it off.
Now, I have a new idol. I rarely read male poets, especially heterosexual ones because I do not think I can relate with their grand themes for I am a lover of personal, confessional, homoerotic poems. But this book made me smile. And green with envy. Now I wanna write a similar book like this because it really haunted me in a good way, as if a benevolent spirit is on my shoulder, watching me while I read.
What I admire too is that this is self-published. Now I am more engulfed with passion to self-publish my book too and share the world my poetry. This book really inspires me to do it, since this is the first self-published poetry book that I have read in my experience as a poet. i will definitely treasure this book which is lovingly dedicated to me by the poet himself with a curt but inspirational message.
I am not exaggerating. As you know, I am addicted to reading poetry because I myself is a poet and I learn more and more about poetry and how to write it by reading other poetry books and studying poets who are already famous and those poets who are self-published or virtually unknown. In my experience, the best poets I have read are those who has no books yet and are only writing poetry out of pleasure or whenever the spirit of poetry possess them. I enjoy independent poets. They make the best book of poems and their themes usually are out of this world. There are few established poets that I love and they are worth mentioning too but not in this review.

Overall, I think this book has one humongous mistake. A very huge irredeemable mistake.
We are fooled thinking that this book is about how insanity evolved. "Do not judge the book by its title", that is more aptly appropriate than the original quotation. We expect to read about insanity and maybe read what author has to say about it and about all its possible forms and appearances throughout time, of how it grows and instills itself to one, of what it does and what it is capable of becoming.
This book has made a very unforgivable mistake...
Instead of the "Evolution of Insanity," this book should be correctly titled as "The Evolution of Genius!"
I love it. I loved it the first time I read it and I know I will love it the next time I will read it. I love the complexity of the book. Some stories may be somewhat shallow, some are deeply profound, some are lamentable, some are funny, some are spicy and ironic, some are mundane, some are exceptional but most of all, every story is a jewel. This book is a veritable treasure box. I have never read such a powerful short story collection.
This book transcends every genre I ever loved and known. It can be described closest as post-modern, but then there are elements of magical realism, of fantasy, of horror, of realism, of parodies and of excitingly innovative ideas. i cannot put this book in the shelf of fiction or non-fiction. I rather put copies of this in a pedestal behind the bookstore's window for all to see if I were a shop owner. This book is definitely beyond any classification. Haresh Daswani speaks of truth, and lies, and creatively made up half-truths and half-lies but most of all, it shows you how diverse the universe is.
This book commits the totality of the cosmos with its myriad instances, its plenty characters, the multiple emotions that it shows and make us readers feel - the love, the terror, the hatred, the disgust, the outrageousness, and many more.
I cannot help but surmise how can a writer this good have escaped me for years. I love weird books, strange literature that goes beyond normal mainstream and popular plots. I love innovation and postmodernism. Some writers I love are Jeanette Winterson, John Fowles, Haruki Murakami, Julian Barnes and now, I am a big fan of Haresh Daswani for sure. He can be ranked with this great writers because the scope of this book is exceptional and beyond comprehension.
Before reading this, I must advise that the reader must be open-minded and wise enough, and prepare himself for anything. I admit there are some parts which I did not get immediately, there are parts which reveal themselves upon the first glance and there are even ones which are harder to decipher. But nevertheless, I will struggle to see all the secrets of this books. The author has many things to tell us and I would be a willing ear to all of it. This book may be as complicated as House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski but this one is more readable and enjoyable. A lot better!
You will be totally mad and stupid if you miss the chance to read this. This is not the evolution of insanity as it states, rather it is the story of the evolution of a great writer's mind. The stories are representative of his skill as a storyteller, or a liar, or a religious figure of truth, whatever he may be in your eyes after you put this book down. You will surely not stop thinking of this long after you finish this.
I am excited just thinking of rereading this again. But this time, I want to relish the magnificence of each story. I will read it in a non-chronological manner, the way Aesop's fables must be read. This book must be read for enjoyment. It also must be read to learn things. I also must be read to discover the universe with new eyes.
This book changed me. It made me want to be a better writer who could make something even one-fourth of this. I am sure as a reader or a fellow author, this book would surely leave an impact to you. It will always leave a place in your heart and your mind, and of course, irrevocably it will make vibrations on your soul that will forever resonate with the whole creation.
So put me now in a strait jacket or inject me with tranquilizers. I have to somehow stop raving about this book!...more

I love reading coming-of-age stories and this one I will certainly remember and treasure forever because it is so readable and I can totally relate to the characters. I feel I am like Crystal, the one desire of the narrator Sebby Spunk. Funny name because I love references to semen, which I myself love =P Sebby actually recalls the word 'sebo' in Filipino language, my native tongue, which refers to the hardened oil collected in fatty foods or in pots which looks so much like spunk! Hahaha cool reference then. Besides, I can totally feel the whoredom and promiscuity of Crystal because I am like her, sleeping around with guys a lot and I don't feel any remorse about it. I am a slut so deal with it. I totally love the way she may get pregnant so many times a year because I feel that way too. I found it hard to put down and it made me want to read more. The book starts off very dramatically, showing the state of the US during the Great Depression. I never thought that it was that bad there because I had no idea how depressing that period was. Then what I liked about it the most is how the family triumphed throughout all the obstacles in their lives and found their own healing place. It is a very beautiful and uplifting novel and it will make you believe in human will and love.
I also love the fact that there is a part of the story set in the Philippines and it made the book closer to my heart. My only negative comment is that it was too short. I simply wanted more. I wanted to learn the lives of the main characters better and I hope the latter part was a lot longer, especially the part set in the Philippines.
