Her humor made life bearable for many housewives and working women who tried desperately to understand WHY they were expected to "do it all." Erma understood everyday things and wrote about those with skill, grace and hilariously funny attitude. Anything by Erma Bombeck is worth a first, second and even third read....more

What I didn't like were all the formatting errors, typos and all around bad presentation. The formatting made this very easy story, hard to read. I am of course speaking of the Kindle edition. I would hope the printed editions are better, but doubt it. A proofreader, an editor and a good typist are sorely needed here....more

Many authors today write a series that leaves you hanging on way too much. Remember "Who Shot J.R.?" and how the speculation over that had to last about 8 or 9 months? Well, many of the "series" novels of today are like that. Not a favorite trend of mine, at all.
However, having purchased the three volumes as one for my Kindle Fire I was able to read the entire series through without so much as waiting on the mail (Amazon or other) or a trip to the bookstore.
Excellent, excellent and one more, Excellent! Great character building tho' at times it seemed the "flashbacks" to character building were put in sort of 'out of hand'. Although not off putting, it was a dreadful time to do that in a couple of instances.
If you are a SciFi fan and/or a future society type buff, you'll love this series with the realization that 'Panem' could be the society in which we could find ourselves some years from now. With steady characters in hand, all attributed with specific skills, only one person seems to be continuously and consistently confused. That would be the heroine, Katniss Everdeen. This is attributed to her age and lack of parental guidance after the death of her Father and her Mother's retreat into herself, unable to cope with her husbands death. As a child without a bright future (as no child has in Panem) she is mixed up on about every front and decisions have to be made lightening fast. She's a fair judge of character but cannot gauge well who is truly trustworthy and who is simply playing her in a game of life and death.
I feel no need to go into much detail here as so many folks will have done that already. But, just for the sake of the 5 stars - I truly found this a "not put-down-able" read: Entertaining, exhilarating, fascinating, depressing in many places, and very very human indeed....more

Character analysis takes you away to some very dark places. But you get through it, and when you do, you are amazed a the resilience of the little girl who was afraid to love, let go, and find happiness, somewhere in her life. Things that happen to her, should not happen to a dog, much less a person.
She thinks she's a freak, but nothing could be further from the truth, well, almost. She is kind of freaky, in anyone's book. Highly intelligent, her brains are what keep her alive through harrowing experiences, where most people would give up and go uh, batty.
I loved the hero(ine) of this book. If you are a male, you'll love her too. This is not a chick book, but a book for all adults.
Not reading for children or young adults either. You need to have a few ouchies under your belt to be able to take some of the darkness.
It's a no brainer to read the next two books. You simply cannot get enough of these characters. ...more
