I discovered it after reading a review in a Sunday paper, obviously a well-written review as it prompted me to go and buy the book, something never achieved before or since! I sat in a restaurant alone and read, and read, and read until it was closing time. That must say something! This true story totally captures the hot, sultry mood of Savannah, and goes at that pace - any faster and I do declare the heat would be too much for the reader! Also unusually, I read the book then saw the movie, instead of vice versa, and was not disappointed by either. I don't want to give it all away, but writer goes to Savannah for weekend, stays for months, meets the locals, becomes embroiled in murder, etc. It's not a whodunnit, we know whodunnit, it's a beautiful character description - of everyone in the book, of Savannah itself and of life in the South. Gorgeous!(less)

By the time I was half way through this, I didn't care.
It's hard to explain what it is about, really, without giving it away - the main character works for a publishers and they receive a manuscript that appears to be worthless but when it hits the streets it takes on cult status, and takes over everything. I haven't put that very well - read it and you'll see what I mean!
It tells you a lot about people, especially certain groups of people. I wish I hadn't given it back now . . (less)

The book, of course, creates much more atmosphere than the TV version - imagination is a wonderful thing. A series of murders baffles a police team during a long hot summer - if I say any more I'm giving it away! It is as graphic as the TV version, so those of faint heart may not wish to read it. But if you're a fan of the show, definitely pick up the book that started it all.(less)

I read a lot of this genre and was getting a little tired of the same things popping up time and time again - same relationship problems, same angst, etc. Karin Slaughter was a breath of fresh air! Warning - it is grisly. But, it is written with life, and enthusiasm, something lacking in the books I was reading before.
The book introduces us to two main characters (and a handful of second stringers) we will meet in later books.
Police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, his ex wife, town paediatrician and coroner Sara. Thrown back together, they have to solve a gruesome murder very close to home.

I think you have to be northern to totally get it, because i can hear his voice and if he wasn't a northerner it just wouldn't sound right! It's essentially about growing up and forging a career - something most of us can relate to - but with a large dollop of celeb thrown in, but down to earth stuff too, such as life teaching at Skem college. I whooed with joy when I discovered where Maconie went to college himself, it's where I went, a fact my brother-in-law who lent me the book kept from me so he didn't spoil the surprise! If you like his show, you'll like the book. If you don't I think you won't.(less)

I've no doubt this book will split Shakespeare fans in just the same way as everything ever written about him has, but it is quite simply a really good whodunnit, using the Bard as a backdrop(less)
