I read it in 3 days because it was sooooo good!! I wasn't planning to read it because I had been told it was disturbing. It would be disturbing if it were real, but it is not. I absolutely enjoyed it from the first page. Can't wait to read the sequels. Great book for a book club. And totally clean throughout.(less)

I rarely read classics because they don't speak to me, and neither did this one. So, now I've read it! I do like the morals of the father in the book, though. Good to keep one grounded.(less)

This is a story about a Hmong family who's daughter became epileptic upon immigrating to the USA and the clash between their deeply rooted belief system and Western Medicine and hospitals. This is a marvelous book detailing the dramas and traumas of doctors and social workers treating her in America and how it majorly clashed with the Hmong belief system. Extraordinarily well-written with incredible research by the author. I only gave it 4 stars because sometimes I skimmed where the author wrote Hmong history, and just wanted to catch back up to the story of the epileptic daughter. Great read. (less)

I was in need of a spiritual read and this I ate up from beginning to end. Bold and wonderful! Just like his dad! It explains gospel truths that mormons know and understand, versus other Christianity's understanding (or misunderstanding) it. With just enough new doctrinal insight to be very enlightening. (less)

He is a fascinating man, and it taught me about 3rd world disease, written by a very good writer with a great vocabulary. It didn't captivate me like some other books did, though it was good. It was more educational.(less)

Everyone, stop what you're doing right now and order this book from Amazon or get it from your library!! It is the true story of a poor kid out of Detroit with a single mom who beat the odds and fought and studied and worked and is the top neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins. It is a fascinating story!!!!! It's a quick read, too, which is always nice. It teaches some good parenting skills practices, too. (less)

I got lost in all the adjectives. Maybe I gave up too soon, I only ready like 30 pages, but I skimmed through the book and it seemed to continue to have the same amount of adjectives. I need something to develop faster than that. But, if you're interested in reading it, see my friends' Keira and Shannon's reviews. They both LOVED it. (less)
