I must admit I was hooked on the story and figuring out how it would all turn out, but I never ceased to be amazed by the twists and turns. I loved how she explained all of the super powers and how everything fit together toward the end. It was a bit gory and I dread how they'll do the movie when it comes out and they put the Hollywood touches on it, but I didn't mind it too much in the story.
Overall a good read and a good finish to the series - particularly since it left room for another story should she change her mind, but brought enough closure to satisfy should this really be the end....more

It was modest enough that I could tolerate her reading it and yet the story kept me interested and anxious to see what happened. I particularly liked that I felt I was learning something as I read b/c she answers so many questions about vampires.
I am undecided as to whether I will read the sequel(s) as I mainly read the book out of curiosity around all the hype and to sensor the story for my daughter who was very interested in it. I will certianly take her to see the movie though and I liked it enough to consider reading the sequel(s)....more

I really do not like what a selfish and needy person Bella is, particularly since my daughter is reading these books. However, this book was a fast read and I really liked how she pulled things together the way she did. The story is fanciful, but vey addicting and fun...the pages turn very fast....more

I found the first half to be really boring b/c it dewlled FOREVER on how empty Bella's life had become without Edward and I kept waiting for Meyer to get on with it already.
I began to like the story a bit more as Bella and Jacob's relationship evolved, but was annoyed with how she was essentially using him and felt that it was getting a bit away from the essence of the series - vampires. I also didn't like the message it was sending my daughter, who also read the book with me, about being so dependent on someone at such a young age and the dramatic lengths she went to "just to hear his voice in her thoughts".
Toward the end the book begins to redeem itself, but I wish this part of the plot had developed so much earlier on than it did. I am looking forward to reading Eclipse to see if Meyer redeems herself, but so far I wonder if I should have stopped with Twilight....more

Annie is his old college roommate's girlfriend and she is having strange and terrifying dreams. The two meet on a fateful night and embark on a journey to solve the mystifying puzzle of Annie's dreams and why she is having them. I was a bit nervous that I wouldn't like this book when I started it. I am not that knowledgeable about, or into, the Civil War and am not terribly into fantasy storytelling either; these combined did not bode well for this book. However, I am so very glad I gave it a chance b/c I really liked it. Willis has a way of writing that really keeps the story flowing and although there are a lot of obscure civil war facts, they were woven into the story so well. There was also a lot of dream theory woven in, which I really enjoyed. I will definitely be reading more by Connie Willis. I love when I can finish a book feeling entertained and educated at the same time. I hope all of Willis's writing is like this one!...more

However, despite being a bit confusing, I stuck with it hoping it would begin to make more sense as I got into the story, and it did. In the end I would certainly say I was captivated by the story, and I am really excited to see the movie now; but I actually think I would enjoy this book a lot more the second time through if I ever decide to re-read it (doubtful). I think this is one of those stories that b/c it's so interwoven, you miss things that you don't know are important the first time through. That said, it's a fascinating concept - time travel. I like how Niffenegger didn't over romanticize the idea of time travel and how she added quite a lot of danger to it. However, the idea of knowing your spouse so well, and knowing from an early age who you're destined to be with is a neat idea. This is an interesting twist on a love story and in the end I was so captivated by the story that I forgave the many parts that confused me and/or I could have done without (i.e. excessive sex in graphic detail, lots of music and art name dropping, and a few other little things). I don't know that I actually recommend this to anyone though. Maybe see the movie and if you like it, then read the book; or just skip it and see the movie....more

Because I didn't have any expectations going into the story, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would considering this is not my typical genre. I thought it was incredibly creative and although I did wish for a better explanation of why Nobody's family was murdered, that was the only thing for me that was disappointing. I loved the mood of the story and the sense of place I got while reading it. I was sad at the end when he began losing his powers and how non-sentimental the good-byes were, but I picture him being buried there when he dies and being reunited with all of his "family" again someday - after he's had all his adventures and truly experienced the life that up to this point he's mostly only heard about. One of the group members commented in the discussion about how lonely his life would be in the real world without any family to lean on. I didn't actually think about the loneliness aspect really until someone brought it up though; I guess I just figured he'll go find Scarlett and although she won't remember him, I imagine there'll be some kind of pull there that will bring them together again. That's what I hope anyway and if that's not how it works out then I hope there's not ever a sequel written so I can go on imagining it that way.
I'm definitely looking forward to the movie when it comes out though. It would be fun to see the creativity of this story played out on screen....more

After she enters this world, bad things start to happen and the only person who can make things right again is Coraline, but she has to outsmart a cunning and deceitful "other mother" first. Can she do it?
My daughter saw this movie and said it was so scary she wouldn't read the book with me. I went ahead and read it on my own b/c I liked The Graveyard Book so much and it did not disappoint. I was hooked from the very start as Coraline is a very charming and clever girl. However, I can see how the movie would be terrifying as the book itself was pretty scary and when you add graphics and an intense musical score, it would be that much more intense. I'm not sure if I ever want to see the movie now for that reason, the book was scary enough for me, thank you.
This was a fun book to read right before Halloween when you're in the mood to be a little scared....more
